I nearly cried when I heard Slade passed next to his mother, teenager or not when you're injured so bad you know you're not gonna make it, or sometimes even if someone hurt you but you're fine, wether it's the shock or pain, you want your parents.

I don't know exactly how he felt, but I can fathom it and understand exactly, but I can say Slade was a strong man for definite, it's the young age that makes you surviv like that.

despite injuries, in teenage years you often have a very strong drive, which keeps you going, you can be hyperactive

so if in critical condition becsuse of many fatal blows and you're gonna succumb, generally you're gonna GO untill you stop,

There's a vast difference between someone doing drugs or property crime and someone doing something to harm another human being. While I absolutely agree that prison should be first and foremost a rehabilitation process and a place where people are given therapy and skills to cope and survive without doing harm to others, people who harm others for sexual pleasure are extremely dangerous after re-release and studies confirm it over and over again. This case was HORRIBLE. Instead of getting rid of the bodies, he left them around the house to rot. Joseph was BEYOND evil. That poor little girl. She must have been absolutely terrified. In that moment, he was 100% right about this country and how we aren't too concerned about fixing the reasons why people fall in the cracks of society, become victims, then become abusers. You are just supposed to "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" and make it through life no matter what hand you are dealt. Unfortunately, in the real world, that isn't something that can be done by everyone. Some people aren't born into money, or a loving family, or with total control of their mental facilities, so a stronger infrastructure of a safety net is vital to stop these things from happening. I remember when this happened, I had just graduated high school. This poor girl has been through more than most people will in their entire life. I recently saw an online video where she speaks about what happened and how difficult it was to live after all she had been through. The part where the abuser says “ he knew a lot about abuse… “ I have no doubt he did. Whatever suffering he may or may not have experienced in childhood that fuelled his later behaviour doesn’t wash with me. I have sympathy for the child in him and his earlier experiences but not for the adult for the following reasons. For some reason the stories on this channel always feel almost like a fever dream when you narrate their actions and take us through the details step by step. It’s so haunting, the way their minds work. “I was putting them out of their misery.” Or “I was ending their suffering.” It’s terrifying to believe there are actual people out there that think like this. The girl ended up being a criminal herself. I think the offenders are actually just people who were victims themselves and have unresolved trauma which needs to be addressed. They don't just commit a crime because they are evil people. As he says, he wants the underlying issues to be addressed so that crime does not happen in the first place. As you can see, he cried out to God asking why he would let this happen. He is a victim himself.
They need treatment to heal to prevent crime in the first place, as the "criminal" usually starts out as a victim such as in the girl's case as well.

This is such a horrible story I’m a 57-year-old man and it’s taking me a lot to hold back tears as I listen to this. And from what I understand the young girl that survived has lived a very difficult life ever since. When I was married to my ex-wife I’d be gone sometimes from the house and I always worried about the family so I acquired two Rottweilers that would not let anyone near the house. I was seven when the Groene case went on, and I grew up a few hours drive south of where it happened in Twin Falls. I remember hearing it on the news and how they were looking for the kids and how they were almost certain they were both dead. When Shasta was found it was absolutely--I guess mindboggling is the correct word. The fact that Dylan didn't make it was horrible. This has to be the best crime report I've ever seen. The detail from the assailant's POV, and the energy of the narrator, who seems like he's pushing other sounds out at the end of every word. All of the last minute revelations , too.....chock full of disturbing content. A morbidly curious couch potatoes wet dream of shameful entertainment. I do feel a bit guilty watching these things as an alternative to some hollywood or indie thriller. But these cases also give me a sense of duty to help when help is needed, and to be way more empathetic to amber alerts and the like.

There’s no way someone as violent as this guy, was able to easily fool ‘trained’ professionals in the field for his release, this doesn’t sound like an accidental mistake. Plus he was completely aware he could be caught and took extra measures, proving he wasn’t insane but rather executed his crimes with intense thinking.

I don't know how I stumbled into these videos but I've listened to many of them. It's so eye opening how many evil people seem to exist amongst us. I have to stop watching some of them because they are so disturbing, especially ones involving children. But then I feel guilty, as if my reaction to this is partially why these things are allowed to happen in our society. Some things are so dark and evil many normal people want to pretend it isn't real and live in denial. I don't know how the police deal with this kind of horror as part of their every day job. I have much more respect for them and can't imagine how hard it must be to remain grounded when dealing with such evil.

Ppl wonder why I'm so vigilant with my children. My daughter never leaves my sight when outside. We had a stalker roaming around our house a few years back and this created a very vigilant side to me. I literally took up night shift so I could be awake while my family sleep, been this way 6 yrs now. No one will be able to enter my house as I have all exits covered. If someone does end up in my house it's game over. They won't make it 2 feet.

@Eye_gunk I never caught them in the act but when covid hit I started getting to know !y neighbors and the guy across the street from us became direct numero uno. We were talking one day and I told him about what had happened and why I shifted my hours of operation and I told him that I had a good idea who it was and he started acting really weird. I initially didn't suspect him but after this conversation I did. He revealed he was on meth so it kinda make sense. However I think this scared him so much that he has gotten off the dope.

I was with my Mom who was admitted in the hospital in another city . First time in my life I felt so scared for my sister . She used to lock the entire house from inside for 20×7 hrs . I live in Coeur d’ Alene and went through this horrific ordeal with everyone else. So many sad aspects to this story, the judges, the court systems, and child protective services. Slade and Shasta didn’t come from a “model family” if you will. My grand daughters went to elementary school with Slade. There a memorial on the playground dedicated to him. 😢
Major gratitude to the waitress at Dennys for recognizing Shasta, and stalling Duncan until the police arrived. Some of the early aspects of the story didn’t quite add up to some of us locals. Tragic nonetheless

I don’t believe that was how Duncan became aware of the family and decided to return to their home. I suspect something else. The entire family were not exactly law abiding citizens and I believe (personally) that Duncan knew of the family before he even got to North Idaho. There were too many pieces of the puzzle that didn’t match up, imo

I knew Shasta as a teenager. Pretty sure she is now a mother. She wasnt mentally good for most of the time i knew her and she struggled a lot. Hopefully shes doing ok now. When my uncle was in jail with Joseph Duncan. He(JD) had to be segregated and my uncle and all other inmates were locked down every time he was moved from his cell because of several threats to kill him.

Its nicer living in a community where there's no locked door. In some smaller italian towns its even normal for neighbors to just go inside each others homes if they need a drink of water or to use the telephone and stuff like this.

I'd say a bigger problem is that there is so little community, whether it is people living far apart from each other or living ontop of each other like in the big cities without knowing ones neighbors even. When you know the people around you and care about them and they care about you, there's little anyone can do.

Besides, we're creatures of habit and for good reason. Things like this are exceedingly rare, living in fear is somewhat worse. I never lock my door. Even if you lock your door, most people will open it if someone knocks or rings on it. The problem here specifically was that this sicko's behaviour was showing very early on, and society neither did anything to monitor him nor to keep him away from others. Everything was wrong with him. It's like some people get the worst diseases, this guy had the worst possible mind, a demon in human form if there ever was one.

For sure but the other point is, never voluntarily allow yourself to be tied up by an intruder, they may say they aren't going to hurt you and that it's just a robbery but no thanks, i'd rather go down rushing the guy the with gun then let myself be tied up and then killed. A couple of people rushing the guy at close distance he is likely to miss most of the shots firing in a panic and at least you have a chance.

Can I just point out that what this guy said about getting people help before they commit violent crimes is very true. Most of these people have extensive past trauma. The current criminal system runs very much like the health system, focused on treatment instead of prevention. If he had gotten help before, these poor children would have never gone through this.

As a mother of 3, one being a 13 yr old teenage boy. The part detailing how Slade was so ruthlessly hit with a hammer, yet managed to get back up & try to run to get help for his family. Then to be attacked again, and to ONCE AGAIN get back up and make it inside to die at his mother's feet. 😭My heart aches so much hearing how hard he fought, and that he was found at his mother's feet. 💔

I know this story. It's a very old one. And so sad. The crazy man who did this horrible crime, has a blog page. Where he has someone on the outside post all of his insane thoughts, and detailing how badly he has it in prison. I read some of the blogs like 5 years ago. Interesting to see inside the mind of a pycho. But just also insane, he talks very openly and honestly about his crimes and his life. It can be gut wrenching. So if you go to the blog beware. It's called the 9th nail. Or the final nail in the coffin. Idk something like that. I haven't looked at it in years, so it may be taken down by now. I always thought it was insane that someone is posting his letters for him. Gross. Those poor poor babies. Shasta is doing okay at least in adulthood. So sad & tragic tho. We've had some terrible things happen here in Idaho but this case by far, has always disturbed and haunted me the most. I remember after Shasta was rescued and the details started to come out about what had happened to them all... I just remember wondering how anyone could ever come back from such atrocities. I felt so incredibly sad for that little girl bc you just knew she was facing insurmountable obstacles for basically the rest of her life. And then to lose your last remaining nuclear family member not long after... It just made you want to wrap her up in a big bear hug ☹️

Well they are required to have access to a lawyer. And the lawyer's job isn't necessarily to get the offender released but make sure that the trial is fair and follows due process, because people are obviously going to be upset so being fair can be hard. If due process of law isn't followed, the offender might be released. Also, sometimes they capture the wrong person (though obviously not in this case) so it helps to have a person who can detach from the emotional aspects of the case. Still, lots of scummy lawyers out there, for sure :S

I think I missed if the years were mentioned during which all of this occurred but immediately after hearing that this guy was from Fargo ND and around MN etc. I immediately had flashbacks of when I was a very young boy who grew up in Bismarck ND... In the winter, they bulldozed the parking lot of an apartment complex that I used to live in creating a very large hill of snow that my friend and I were playing in on our way home from elementary school. As we were playing, I noticed a man in one of the apartment windows of my old apartments that we had just moved out of, and it was actually in the very same apartment that my family lived in (he was in the room that belonged to my sister) and it became apparent to me that the man was naked and was touching himself but when I pointed to my friend he would quickly move away from the window, and then return only moments later. I immediately called the police when I got home to tell them and they later told me that they just took him in for questioning but no arrest was made because of course they couldn't actually charge him with anything having no actual evidence. I used to play around this neighbourhood even after my family had moved as a couple of my friends still lived across the street from my old apartments, and this very same man on another occasion was outside and he had some p*rn*graphic magazine and was attempting to lure me and my friend to come take a look (and presumably follow him into his apartment). I was only in elementary school at the time but thank God I had the sense enough to know better than to go anywhere near this monster. Anyway, the reason I mention all of this is because I am only a 3rd into this video, and I see this perpetrators photo who was responsible for this and hear that he was from Fargo ND and had many criminal charges and I can't help but wonder if this was the same guy, as I don't remember exactly what the man looked like as it was so many many years ago (maybe 25-30 years ago) and I was also quite young at the time, but still I never forget this incident for my entire life and how I called the police on my own before ever even speaking to my parents about it and I even remember how upset I was that he wasn't actually arrested because I remember how unsafe I felt that he was let out and knowing that it was very likely that it was us that called the police.

Ah yes..the EWU crew certainly know how to monetize grief, tragedy and sensationalise abhorrent cruelty and torture. Damn, he was actually spot on on his blog. I think it's time that we start listening to criminals on how to make them not want to commit crimes instead of on how to catch them. If anyone knows how to do that it's them and not the so called experts. But then again if we did that we would have these kinds of videos to entertain us. He knew exactly what the problem was and laid it all out for everyone to see, but no one listened or even cared.

He was absolutely right about the need to address the roots of these issues rather than attacking the symptoms. These types of offenders are not created in a vacuum. Abuse begets abuse. Not all victims of abuse will go on to abuse others, in fact most will not. But pretty much all abusers were once victims.

That girl is such a strong person ! Just doncrappy she will be affected by the POS who killed her brothers and mom for the rest of her life . I wish her and her dad the best going forward. I just can't even imagine what she went through. Breaks my heart .

It’s so amazing how these monsters blame everything on society and their hard childhood. Cry me a river lots of people have hard childhoods. I use to wonder why some people are so cruel. I think some “humans” are just born that way. And they enjoy hurting people. 😢

Everyone is talking about Slade or Shasta while both are undeniably tragic I can't imagine the utter terror poor little Dylan had to go through! Being tortured by that monster! How alone and terrified the poor little baby must have been. It makes my blood boil! He got abducted, tortured, murdered brutally and his body got burned then tossed around like garbage. Just appalling... My heart truly aches for the little boy.

Dylan was not killed accidentally. Later reports said he shot him in the stomach area intentionally, then as the child screamed, aimed and pulled the trigger again only for it not to fire. The child then begged for his life while he reloaded. This man was a monster.
