Allegedly, this was the movie that killed the cast and crew because it was filmed miles from a nuclear test site. After its release, many of the horses were euthanized and like John Wayne, much of the cast and crew succumbed to cancer.

Honestly it can't get any worse than this, I think he should of, even if he'd of put a terrible sounding Mongolian accent on (and I'm sure he would of), it would of been better in terms of historical accuracy, not that this film is really big on that subject matter though...

I absolutely have to watch this movie. I know it's been ridiculed forever but Wayne is surprisingly convincing in his role. Armendariz looks perfect in his role. Hayward looks a little uncomfortable, perhaps because of the deliberately revealing costumes.

The book "The Killing John Wayne" sent me here. It's about the making of this troubled mid-50s epic & how so many of the cast members & crew would later die of cancer. Most of the film was shot in St George, Utah, which is not far from one of the principal atomic testing sites. Talk about rampant radiation !!

The Duke his eyebrows shaved off, painted himself yellow and then adding fake eyelids with rubber bands glued to the side of the head with spirit gum, to pull the corners of his eyes into a “slant”. Filmed entirely on a nuclear testing ground, the film that killed him.

the mongols were generally horse archers with their keshiks why do I see sword play. Also I see a great lack of mongol tactics, It was said they would attack with a force then retreat and lead their foe into an ambush

I loved John Wayne. He wasn't a great actor and didn't assume roles. He played the same role in virtually every movie, that of John Wayne. But that bigger than life persona was always entertaining. And how about the gorgeous Susan Hayward playing a Mongol who looks like she just emerged from a Beverly Hills salon?

John Wayne was great playing Ghengis Khan, but I do agree that Susan Hayward was not believable as Boretai. No way that Boretai was a white red head and unlike the movie, their marriage was already arranged just before Tejujin’s father was assassinated.

I actually saw (some) of the film. It's unquestionably the worst movie John Wayne made, but don't blame him. The studio system was still in place, and film making was vertically integrated. The same company owned the studio, the distributor=tor, and the theaters in which the films were shown. If you wre an actor, you were under exclusive contract to the studio, and you played the parts they gave you, or you didn't work. I have no idea who thought casting John Wayne as Genghis Khan made sense. If memory serves, the film tanked, which served the studio right. If you get a chance to see the film, either get really enhanced and turn off your brain, or Just Say No.

My mom, God rest her soul, casually mentioned that John Wayne starred as Genghis Khan. I didn’t believe it at the time because I had seen my share of westerns and war movies starring the Duke and the thought of him playing an Oriental was ridiculous. That is, until I had read about this movie in a coffee table book called THE 50 WORST MOVIES OF ALLL TIME by Randy Dreyfuss and Harry Medved. I saw the movie later on, and it was on TNT. THE CONQUEROR was goofball through and through, and an awful lot of the cast members (including John Wayne) died from cancer as a result of being exposed to radioactivity from a nearby atomic bomb test site. Yeeeesh.
