Seasons Change
Exposé Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some dreams are in the night time
And some seem like yesterday
But leaves turn brown and fade
Ships sail away
You long to say a thousand words
But seasons change

It feels like it's forever
No reason for emptiness
But time just runs away
No more day by day
You dream again it seems in vain
When seasons change

I want you
I want to feel you by my side
I need you
Don't you know I need you baby

Seasons change feelings change
It's been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
Seasons change people change
I'll sacrifice tomorrow
Just to have you here today

For ever seems so far away
There's time for love and for play
You dream about today
Feeling slips away
The winds that blow they go away
And seasons change

I want you
Don't hide your feelings from inside
I need you
I've got to have your love now baby

Seasons change feelings change
It's been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
Seasons change people change

I want you
I want to feel you by my side
I need you
I've got to have your love now baby

Seasons change feelings change
It's been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday
Seasons change people change
I'll sacrifice tomorrow
Just to have you here today
Just to have you here today

Seasons change feelings change
It's been so long since I found you
Yet it seems like yesterday

Seasons change people change
Change the season

Overall Meaning

The song Seasons Change by Exposé starts off with the lines “Some dreams are in the night time, and some seem like yesterday,” that reflect the transience of time and how quickly things can change. The following lines “But leaves turn brown and fade, Ships sail away” remind us that seasons change, and with that change, people and their feelings change too. Despite the desire to hold on to someone, to say a thousand words, to feel their love, time has a way of slipping away and people move on.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the theme of change by repeating the words “Seasons change feelings change” as a reminder that everything and everyone is in a constant state of flux. The lines “I’ll sacrifice tomorrow just to have you here today” echo a sense of urgency, a desire to hold on to a fleeting moment or person, to make the most of the present before it slips away.

Overall, Seasons Change is a poignant song about how time changes everything, including people, and how we must learn to accept and let go of the things that we cannot control despite our deepest desires.

I remember this song! I worked at a "Dunkin Doughnuts" back when the doughnuts, muffins, and fritters were made fresh in the kitchen. Anyway, it was the winter of 1987 and I worked with this cool older black guy named Herman.
I'm sure he passed away decades ago because he was in his 60s and a very heavy smoker and had a horrible cough, even back then! R.I.P.

We made doughnuts for all the "White Castles" in Columbus, Ohio. We used to listen to this song on our delivery route, at least 5 times in a row, it was in heavy rotation on all the light FM stations! We drove a white 1985 extended Ford Econoline van! LOL!! I swear that van was so cold and freezing!!! Because the heat barely worked!! 😞

Shout Out to Sunny 95!! (One of the popular local light FM stations back then). Then they'd play "She's Like The Wind" by the late Patrick Swayze (R.I.P.) and then they'd play "West End Girls," by "The Pet Shop Boys."

But this song is the one that has been stuck in my head for 35 years!! Wow, where did all the years go?! I wasn't making money like I am today!! But this song for some reason brings back exactly what I was doing back then and where I was!!

I was 18 back then, and now I'm 54!! Seasons definitely change! WOW!!

Your kids are growing up in a different time than we did, Dee. As such, the things that make them happy may not necessarily be the same things that made us happy. They'll figure it out on their own, just like we did.

Have you ever read the following from poet Kahlil Gibran? If not, maybe you will enjoy it.

On Children

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Kahlil Gibran
The Prophet, 1923

When this song came out on the radio, I was attending P.S. 241 in Crown heights, Brooklyn.
Two tone jeans, acid wash jeans, the
"Adidas Patrick Ewing" sneakers, the
leather "V goose" bomber jackets, "lemon heads", "now&later", "jolly rancher", "Boston baked beans", "Garbage Pail Kids", "Atari 2600",
"Huffy/Bmx" bikes and etc!
I miss the 1980s so much!
The music,
the movies,
the fashion,
the culture and
the real human condition!
