FM
Black Noise
Black Noise
As the dawn breaks, the mist clears, the story unfolds
With the battle plans ready each man is told
Not to rest while the last of the enemy stands
For the dream of the future they hold in their hand
To live To love

In a heartbeat, on a clear day, in the land we call home
Where the earth seems to move with a presence unknown
As each man hears a sound that is felt through the air
For the dream of the future they rise and they dare

To live To love

As the night falls, the moon dreams, the city unwinds
It's each man for himself, and he grabs what he finds
But he's caught by the noise, from the blackness it sounds
So he turns from the street and he crawls underground

To live To love

Overall Meaning

The song "Black Noise" by FM, is a powerful and poetic tribute to the experiences of soldiers on the battlefield. The song opens with an image of dawn breaking and mist clearing, as the soldiers prepare for battle. Each man is told not to rest until the last of the enemy has fallen, fighting for the dream of the future that they hold in their hands. This dream is an ideal of peace and love, something that is worth fighting for, even as they face the harsh realities of war.

Throughout the song, we get a sense of the magnitude of the struggle that these soldiers face. The land itself seems to move with a sense of foreboding, and there is a palpable tension in the air. The soldiers hear sounds that are felt through the air, as they rise and dare to defend this dream of a better future.

As night falls, the scene shifts to the city, where each man is left to fend for himself. But even here, he is caught by the sound of black noise, an ominous force that calls to him from the darkness. It is a reminder that even in times of peace, there is always the threat of violence and destruction, always the possibility that the dream of a better future may be shattered.

"Black Noise" is a powerful and moving song that captures the essence of the soldier's experience. It reminds us of the importance of preserving the dreams of the future, even in the face of adversity and hardship.

Glándulas mamarias sólo funcionales en las hembras

Hold fast
Hold on
Nothing is a dream, yet in
Changing faster
It never seems to be here long
Move on
Turn 'round
Just can't seem to find it, try and
Reach out
Hold out
I cannot touch the wind
I touch you
Reach out
Hold out
Nothing here is real, yet and
Searching farther
It almost seems to live until it
Moves on
Turns 'round
Just can't seem to lose it, try and
Hold fast
Hold on
I cannot ride the wind
I ride you
Hold fast
Hold on
Nothing is a dream until you
Wake up
Cry out
Now it isn't real, now you
Hold fast Nothing is a dream
Hold on Just can't lose it now
Move on Turning round and round
Wake up You cannot ride the wind
Hold fast Nothing is a dream
Hold on Just can't lose it now
Move on Turning round and round
Wake up You cannot ride the wind

[Verse 1]
As the dawn breaks, the mist clears, the story unfolds
With the battle plans ready each man is told
Not to rest while the last of the enemy stands
For the dream of the future they hold in their hand

[Chorus]
To live
To love
To live
To love

[Verse 2]
In a heartbeat, on a clear day, in the land we call home
Where the earth seems to move with a presence unknown
As each man hears a sound that is felt through the air
For the dream of the future they rise and they dare

[Chorus]
To live
To love
To live
To love

[Verse 3]
As the night falls, the moon dreams, the city unwinds
It's each man for himself, and he grabs what he finds
But he's caught by the noise, from the blackness it sounds
So he turns from the street and he crawls underground

[Chorus]
To live

Glándulas mamarias sólo funcionales en las hembras

[Verse 1]
Now the starships gather here, their holds are filled with men
All waiting to leave the port
Soon with dreams of other worlds, the starships leave the Earth
And they reach out to touch the stars

[Chorus]
Now as they challenge the unknown, for the honour that they seek
They are following a path to an end they'll never reach

[Verse 2]
Time regards us with a smile, the lives we live again are nothing beyond a dream
Still the nations rise and fall, we feel the tides will turn
And bring us a world of change

[Chorus]
Now as they challenge the unknown, for the honour that they seek
They are following a path to an end they'll never reach

@Mind Travels Awesome !!! :O

@Tom Fletcher Cheers Tom !!! PS: I will make sure to check out that info about Nash. Thanks so kindly for that!

Mind Travels

@Tom Fletcher I saw FM live a few times, mostly opening for Rush in Toronto and surrounding area and they were amazing. Your take on Nash the Slash is right on: tripped out and intelligent. Probably born in the wrong era as he was sorely underappreciated.

Sparrow TV

@Tom Fletcher I was at the same club in Ottawa when I saw him too. On River road.

Tom Fletcher

Thanks Mark. I am Canadian and know the "legend" of these guys. Saw Nash the Slash at an Ottawa club in the mid-80's. Tripped-out and intelligent guy. He wore the bandages as some sort of Political Statement about the Chernobyl disaster and nuclear proliferation / global peace. If you go to his website (now managed by his estate... since he died abut 12 years ago) he wrote a very interesting letter about his decision to officially retire from Music which is posted. It is worth reading.

I remember first seeing FM open for Rush. They actually did that multiple times, as Rush tried their best to help FM get wider exposure. Every time I saw these guys live, they never disappointed. Nash, Martin, Cameron, then Ben, Martin, Cameron always played their asses off, and the Rush braintrust made sure they got decent sound and lighting for an opener. There's no doubt that FM Influenced Rush as they transitioned to a more synth heavy sound. All you have to do is listen to any of the track off of FM's Surveillance, then listen to Signals. Cameron showed Geddy it was possible to multitask. Geddy took it to another level of course. Mr. Peart deserves his rep as one of the best ever, but I always thought that Martin Deller got overlooked. His work on the first 3 albums is right there with any of the other heavyweights of the time. This album has not aged a day. its as fresh and as inspiring as it was in 78 when I picked up a copy from the local Sams. worn out vinyl, cassettes, and finally got the 3+Direct To Disc remastered versions a few years back. FM should have be way, way, bigger than they were.

Larry YXZ

I saw FM open for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens back in March 25, 1981.

John Andrews

Totally agree and Deller was as good as any of his peers. Waaaay underestimated.

Larry Fremes

Totally agree & well said. Mentioning multi-tasking is one of Cam's strongest attributes. He could play 2 keyboards, lead vocals & bass pedal synthesizers all at the same time. He taught Geddy lots about doing that.
