Phasors on Stun
FM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hold on
Nothing is a dream, yet in
Changing
Faster
It never seems to be here long
Move on
Turn around
Reach out
And hold out
I cannot touch the wind
I touch you
Reach out
Hold out
Nothing here is real, yet in
Searching
Farther
It almost seems to live until it
Moves on
Or turns 'round
Just can't seem to lose it, try and
Hold fast
And hold on
I cannot ride the wind
I ride you
Hold fast
Hold on
Nothing is a dream until you
Wake up
Cry out
Now it isn't real, now you
Hold fast
Nothing is a dream
Hold on
Just can't lose it now
Move on
Turning round
Wake up
You cannot ride the wind
Hold fast
Nothing is a dream
Hold on
Just can't lose it now
Move on
Turning round and round
Wake up
You cannot ride the wind
The song "Phasors on Stun" by FM is a metaphorical representation of the ephemeral nature of life and the constant changing and evolving nature of the world around us. The lyrics start off by emphasizing the transience of life and how nothing seems to be permanent, everything keeps changing and moving at a fast pace. The mention of wind is used as a metaphor for this constant movement and change. The lyrics urge the listener to hold on to something or someone, to reach out and hold out, to try and find something substantial to grasp onto in the midst of all the uncertainty.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more introspective and philosophical. They highlight the idea that nothing is real or permanent, everything is just a perception or a dream until one wakes up and realizes the truth. The lyrics urge the listener to keep trying to hold on to what they believe in, even though it may seem like an insurmountable task. Ultimately, the message of the song is to hold on to what is important in life, even though it may be fleeting and elusive.
Overall, the song is a beautiful representation of the human experience and the struggle that we all go through to find meaning and purpose in our lives. It encourages us to keep searching, keep moving forward, even in the face of uncertainty and chaos. The use of poetic language and metaphor in the lyrics adds to the song's depth and allows the listener to interpret the meaning in their own way.

I saw them open for Rush as well.
Great Western Forum, or, what then was still the Fabulous Forum in L.A.
Great concert.
FM were phenomenal.
Sadly very deeply underrated.
They should have been much bigger, and this song proves that.
Like Rush, they were a power trio, drums, keyboards and vocals, and violin and mandolin instead of guitar.
I believe Ben Mink was their violinist for that tour, but Nash the Slash played on the Black Noise album, that much I remember.
He might not have been calling himself that at the time Black Noise was recorded.
(He may have still been using his real name, Jeff Plewman, when that record was recorded originally.)
As it turns out, Cameron Hawkins, FM's founding keyboardistand lead singer, has continued to record and tour under the FM moniker.
Since 2011, FM has been a four piece, with two violinist/mandolin players, and a drummer, to augment Cameron's keyboards and vocals.
(Cameron used to occasionally play bass as well.)
Cameron Hawkins is the only remaining original member of FM.
RIP Nash the Slash.

Dear Sir, Canadian to boot is considered a racial slur here in Saskatoon

@Mark Engel LOL, my comment was meant as a joke, but thanks for the words of advice. I'm far from a Millennial, I'm a grown man, so don't talk to me like that, you get over it and move on.

Going through a treasure trove of vinyl I had just discovered today languishing in a box in the basement I came across this album by FM. I have always loved Phasors on Stun. It was great to hear it again after so many years. Didn't know FM was a Canadian band. Coincidentally, I stumbled upon it today, Canada Day, July 1, 2023.
