The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Não me escutes, nostálgico a cantar
Pois não sei se feliz ou infelizmente
Não me é dado, beijando, te acordar
Dorme, deixa os meus cantos delirantes
Dorme, que eu olho o céu a contemplar
A lua que procura diamantes
Para o teu lindo sonho ornamentar
Na serpente de seda dos teus braços
Alguém dorme, ditoso, sem saber
Que eu vivo a padecer
E o meu coração feito em pedaços
Vai sorrindo ao teu amor
Mascarado dessa dor
No teu quarto de sonho e de perfume
Onde vive a sorrir teu coração
Que é teatro da ilusão
Dorme junto a teus pés o meu ciúme
Enjeitado e faminto como um cão
E o meu coração feito em pedaços
Vai sorrindo ao teu amor
Mascarado dessa dor
No teu quarto de sonho e de perfume
Onde vive a sorrir teu coração
Que é teatro da ilusão
Dorme junto a teus pés o meu ciúme
Enjeitado e faminto como um cão
The lyrics of Fagner's song "Serenata" convey a sense of longing and unrequited love. The singer addresses a sleeping person, urging them to continue sleeping and not listen to his nostalgic song. He admits that he doesn't know if he should be happy or unfortunately unable to wake the person up with a kiss. The singer acknowledges the beauty of the person's dreams, likening them to diamonds that decorate the night sky and fuel his delirious songs.
The second verse speaks of the singer's suffering in the embrace of the person they long for. While the person sleeps blissfully unaware, the singer's heart is shattered into pieces. Yet, they continue to smile, masking their pain with love. The person's room is described as a dreamlike and fragrant place where their heart resides, but the singer's jealousy lies at their feet, abandoned and hungry.
Overall, "Serenata" encapsulates the bittersweet reality of unrequited love, where the singer finds solace in dreaming and admiring the person from a distance while silently enduring their own longing and suffering.
