Bed Of Roses
Faith Hill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's something 'bout your manner
That makes it hard to see
Just how you take advantage
Of a workin' girl like me
I've seen you set 'em up
And I've seen you take 'em down
Our love is legal tender
For your kind to pass around

Don't want your bed of roses
Don't want no handful of thorns
Don't want to be your livin' doll
Don't want to be no woman scorned
I don't want to watch you turn the page
When our chapter closes
No, I'm not gonna lay me down
In your bed of roses

I've tasted good and bad love
In the honky-tonks and bars
I've settled for the moon
When I was reachin' for the stars
And though sometimes I have stumbled
I've been known to fall
It was always true love
That took me to the wall

Don't want your bed of roses
Don't want no handful of thorns
Don't want to be your livin' doll
Don't want to be no woman scorned
I don't want to watch you turn the page
When our chapter closes
No I'm not gonna lay me down
In your bed of roses

Girl you better hide your love away
Girl you better save it for another day

Overall Meaning

In Faith Hill's song "Bed of Roses," the singer is addressing a man who takes advantage of her and other "working girls." She has seen him "set up" and "take down" women for his own pleasure. Despite the fact that their love is "legal tender" for him to pass around, the singer does not want to be just another woman in his bed of roses. She doesn't want to be his living doll, nor does she want to be a woman scorned. Rather, she wants true love and doesn't want to lay down in his bed of roses when their chapter eventually closes.

The singer reflects on her past experiences with good and bad love in honky-tonks and bars. She settled for "the moon" when reaching for the "stars," and though she has stumbled and fallen along the way, it was always true love that brought her to "the wall." While the man may be used to getting what he wants from women, the singer will not be another one of his conquests. She warns the man that he better save his love for another day.

The song is a powerful statement of self-worth and a refusal to settle for less than genuine love. It highlights the struggles of women in a patriarchal society where they are often objectified and treated as less than human. By saying no to the bed of roses and standing up for herself, the singer empowers herself and sends a message that women deserve to be loved and respected for who they are.
