After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Hey, separate the anxiety
Oh, separate the anxiety
Hey, you know it's mine
Had love come back
Like it was before
House creaking
Thoughts creeping
Oh, separating anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety
Hey, you know it's mine
Separate the anxiety
Hey, you know it's mine
It's like when your mind
Has a mind of it's own
Please take mine
Don't leave me alone
Capture me
Separation anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety
Hey, you know it's mine
I can't let you go
'Cause you're a part of me
Not apart from me
Here's a little sip for me
Well, it's good enough for me
I cannot separate from this anxiety
Come home and make our truce
Violence is what we learned
Listen in reverence
Why it can not pass
If you only make us
Then violence is what we learn
How can I separate
From this anxiety?
Separation anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety, hey
Oh, separate the anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety, hey
Oh, separation anxiety
Hey, separate the anxiety, hey, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey, hey
Closing my eyes
Separation anxiety, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey, hey
Closing my eyes
Separation anxiety, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey
Closing my eyes
Separation anxiety, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey, hey
Closing my eyes
Separation anxiety, hey
Separate the anxiety, hey, hey, hey
"Separation Anxiety" by Faith No More is a song that explores the struggle to let go of an anxiety-filled situation or relationship. The repeated phrases, "separate the anxiety" and "you know it's mine," suggest that the anxiety is tied to the singer's identity or sense of self. The lyrics depict a situation where love had once been strong, but now things feel strained and uneasy, with the house creaking and thoughts creeping. The singer pleads for someone to capture them and not leave them alone, as if they fear that their identity may be lost if they are separated from this anxiety.
The chorus is a plea to separate the anxiety, yet it's clear that the singer is struggling to do so. The lines, "I cannot separate from this anxiety" and "how can I separate from this anxiety?" suggest that letting go of this anxious state may not be possible. The final lines, "closing my eyes," are a sign of resignation, as if the singer has given up on trying to separate themselves from the anxiety.
The song's lyrics are ambiguous and open to interpretation, but the overall feeling is one of desperation and a struggle to maintain a sense of self in the face of anxiety. The repeated phrase "separate the anxiety" becomes almost like a mantra, emphasizing the importance of letting go, yet also suggesting that it may not be so easy to do.
