A pioneer of the progressive metal movement, Fates Warning has been referred to as one of the "Big Three" of the genre, creating and popularizing the style along with Queensrÿche and Dream Theater. Their early work, influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal, is also important in the development of American power metal. Fates Warning has released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, one compilation album, one VHS cassette, three DVDs (each featuring live concerts) and four demo tapes. The band experienced its first commercial success with the 1986 release of their third studio album, Awaken the Guardian, which peaked at No. 191 on the Billboard 200 and became the first album released on Metal Blade to enter that chart. Their next three albums—No Exit (1988), Perfect Symmetry (1989) and Parallels (1991)—were also successful; the first two peaked at No. 111 and No. 141 on the Billboard 200, respectively. By 2001, Fates Warning had sold over a million albums worldwide. Their thirteenth studio album, Long Day Good Night, was released on November 6, 2020.

Monument
Fates Warning Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's a need to leave some lasting feat
Something to hold, something to keep
A monument to complete
There's a written page there's a book
There's a search for something to say
Something to share, something to speak
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it a passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it a passion or just an obsession
There's a photograph there's a frame
There's a time, a moment to confine
Something to save, something to see
A monument to enshrine
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it a passion or just a profession
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it a passion or just an obsession
There's an empty room there's a blank page
There's a picture left incomplete
Something is lost, something remains
A monument to defeat
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it a passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it a passion or just an obsession
The song "Monument" by Fates Warning is about the human desire to leave a lasting legacy or mark in the world. The lyrics describe different ways people try to achieve this, such as through creating art, writing, or capturing important moments in a photograph. The repeated refrain of "a monument to" emphasizes the idea of creating something that will last beyond one's lifetime.
The song also explores the motivations behind creating these monuments. The lyrics suggest that it can be driven by a passion or obsession, as well as a desire for self-expression or confession. The line "something is lost, something remains" implies a sense of loss or incompleteness that drives people to create something permanent and meaningful.
Overall, "Monument" is a reflection on the human desire to create and leave a lasting mark on the world, and the different ways people go about achieving that goal.

@FallouFitness_NattyEdition
These guys will forever be my favorite band. I'm just sad that they never got the recognition they rightfully deserved.
@greekfreak1980
For those who don't know,Fates Warning are among the pioneers of Prog-Metal.They inspired Petrucci and Portnoy to form Dream Theater.And they're still producing quality albums,like ''Theories of Flight'' and touring.
@ln4454
That´s true. Fates Warning keeps rocking while Dream Theater became boring after some time.
@greekfreak1980
Sa them live lately,they still bring it.
@88omair
Yeah but their new albums are a snoozefest, and they used to be my favourite band. I didn't even bother listening to The Astonishing in it's entirety
@ronsdad3736
I don't think they inspired Dream Theater, Rush, Iron Maiden, old fashioned prog bands and such are what inspired them. Nonetheless, both bands are pioneers and front runners of prog metal.
@ln4454
The right man from DT would be Kevin Moore, who played in Perfect Simmettry, as well in Disconected and some other songs also. He formed OSI w/ Matheos, an alternative prog style, something like that
@MauricioRomero-cz8bp
Frank Aresti is my favorite FW lead axeman: he plays with speed, melody, and feeling, and he's also a great songwriter, it's a shame he isn't in the band anymore; in fact, this was the best lineup, God bless Fates Warning!!! ❤❤😊😊
@dennyanthonymusic
Fates Warning marked my life forever! Ray Alder just about single handedly inspired my vocal work (Along with Tate of course). Fates Warning will always be my all time favorite band (without hesitation).
@tenzin682
Denny, I feel the exact same way. I sang for years and years, Ray was my favorite vocalist to cover, I love his tone and his phrasing. My biggest influence also, my band even named our original project "Perfect Symmetry". Yeah, kinda of stalker-like!!
