New Orleans Ain't The Same
Fats Domino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

New Orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I done lost you
If you come back
I make it up to you

When I made you sad
I made my ownself blue
New orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I done lost you

My nights are so lonely
My nights are filled with misery
Dixieland music don't sound the same to me
New Orleans ain't the same

Not darlin' since I done lost you
As I walked down Basin Street
I have to hang my head
I can't face the folks I meet

Memories made my tears shed
When I had your love
I had the world on a string
When I lost you I lost everything

New Orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I don't have you
As I walked down Basin Street

I have to hang my head
I can't face folks I meet
Memories make my tears shed
When I had your love

I had the world on a string
When I lost you I lost everything
New orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I don't have you

New Orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I done lost you

New Orleans ain't the same
Not darlin' since I

Overall Meaning

don't have you

In "New Orleans Ain't The Same," Fats Domino laments the loss of a lover and the changes that have occurred in his beloved city since their separation. Fats Domino begins by acknowledging that New Orleans has lost its sparkle since he lost his lover. He is willing to do whatever it takes to bring her back because he realizes he has made a mistake in making her unhappy. With her departure, everything around him has changed, and it isn't the same New Orleans any longer. Fats Domino is saddened because all the places and sounds he loved in his hometown have turned dull, and he is left with a lonely existence.

In the second verse, Fats Domino describes the way in which life has become bleak since his lover's departure. He feels very lonely at night and finds no solace in the music from the Dixieland. As he walks down a major street in the city, he is ashamed to look at people's faces and instead casts his gaze downward, hiding the fact that he is unhappy. Memories of going out with his lover flood Fats Domino's mind, and he can't help shedding tears. The third verse repeats the same theme, driving home the point that Fats Domino is helpless without his lover and desperate to bring her back since he's losing himself and everything he once held dear.
