Honey Suckle Rose
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every honey bee fills with jealousy,
When they see you out with me.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

When you're passin' by flowers droop and sigh,
And I know the reason why.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Overall Meaning

The song Honey Suckle Rose by Fats Waller is a playful and flirtatious declaration of love. In the first stanza, Waller compares his sweetheart to a honeysuckle rose, a flower known for its sweet fragrance. He notes that even the honey bees are jealous when they see him with her. In the second stanza, Waller explains that when his sweetheart passes by, flowers droop and sigh because she's so stunning. The third stanza is particularly romantic, with Waller using metaphors to describe the sweetness of his love. He notes that he doesn't need sugar because he has his sweetheart's touch, and that she's his sugar because everything is sweeter when she's around. Finally, Waller describes the sweetness of his kisses and declares that his sweetheart is his one and only Honeysuckle Rose.

Loved Fats way back when, and now, aged 87, still do. Introduced my 23 year old grandson to "Your feet's too big" which produced a great laugh. Will always remember in particular "When somebody... which will go with me to my grave. Cheers to all Fats' fans. Keep on playing, and enjoying him. England, December, 2023.
