Saint Louis Blues
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hate to see that evening sun go down
I hate to see that evening sun go down
Cause my baby, he's gone left this town

Feelin' tomorrow like I feel today
If I'm feelin' tomorrow like I feel today
I'll pack my truck and make my give-a-way
St. Louis woman with her diamond ring
Pulls that man around by her, if it wasn't for her and her
That man I love would have gone nowhere, nowhere

I got the St. Louis blues, blues as I can be
That man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea
Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me

I love my baby like a school boy loves his pie

Like a Kentucky colonel loves his mint 'n rye
I love my man till the day I die

Overall Meaning

Fats Waller's song St. Louis Blues is an emotional blues number about a man who has left the town, leaving his lover feeling heartbroken and lost. The first verse sets the tone for the song, as the singer expresses his dissatisfaction with the setting sun. He hates to see the sun go down because it symbolizes the departure of his beloved, who has left him to think about their future. The second verse is equally melancholic, as he says that if he feels just as hopeless tomorrow as he does today, he will have no choice but to leave town for good. The St. Louis woman mentioned in the next verse is likely the one who seduced the singer's lover away from him. He paints a picture of her wielding her diamond ring to keep him under her spell, without which the man he loves would have never left him. The song concludes with a somber acknowledgment of the singer's undying love for his man, comparing it to the way a schoolboy loves his pie or a Kentucky colonel loves his mint n' rye.
