Pedestal
Fergie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your pedestal is falling down, falling down, falling down
Your pedestal is falling down, da da da da da da da da da da

Record sales are on the mark
'Cause that's about the time the rumors start
Where all the people talking out of their ass
Well, someone's gotta school ya 'cause ya got no class
Well, I've paid my dues
I'm a seasoned dame
So why you gotta throw salt in my game?
You hide behind the computer screens so that you don't have to be seen
How could a person be so mean?

Who are you, and what do you do
That makes you think you're above me?
But have you walked in my shoes?
The pedestal
You put yourself on
Well, since I'm breaking it down now
It's gon' collapse and be gone, gone

(Gone, gone, gone)
(Gone, gone, gone, gone)

Probably one of them tag-a-longs
Down for the free t-shirt 'cause you're a hanger-on
You think you got me figured out
Never met me, have no clue what I'm about
Maybe I got things you wish you had
You need to stop the hate and get a pen and pad
I work around the clock, so fill your mouth up with a sock
And get yo' head up off your jock
Tell me who you are and what your background is
Tell me how you're feelin' when you listen to this

Who are you, and what do you do
That makes you think you're above me?
But have you walked in my shoes?
The pedestal
You put yourself on
Well, since I'm breaking it down now
It's gon' collapse and be gone, gone

Your pedestal is falling down, falling down, falling down
Your pedestal is falling down, dum dum dum dum
Your pedestal is falling down, falling down, falling down
Your pedestal is falling down, da da da da da da da da da da da
Tell me who you are and what your background is
Tell me how you're feelin' when you listen to this
You think I don't see you on the Internet
I read it; don't think I won't forget

Who are you, and what do you do
That makes you think you're above me?
But have you walked in my shoes?
The pedestal
You put yourself on
Well, since I'm breaking it down now
It's gon' collapse and be gone, gone

Who are you, and what do you do
That makes you think you're above me?
But have you walked in my shoes?
The pedestal
You put yourself on

Well, since I'm breaking it down now
It's gon' collapse and be gone, gone

Overall Meaning

In "Pedestal," Fergie sings about someone who has put themselves on a pedestal, thinking they are above her, and how their pedestal is falling down. She starts off by mentioning how rumors always seem to start as soon as record sales are on the mark, and that people talk out of their ass without having any actual class. Fergie, on the other hand, has paid her dues and is a seasoned dame.

She then asks who the person is and what they do that makes them think they are above her. Fergie challenges them to walk in her shoes and understand what she has gone through. She wonders how someone could be so mean and hide behind a computer screen. Fergie talks about how she works tirelessly and that anyone who thinks they are above her should fill their mouth up with a sock instead of talking about her behind her back.

As the song progresses, Fergie mentions how the person probably thinks they have her figured out, but they do not know her at all. They try to bring her down with hate, but she advises them to use their energy more positively by jotting things down on a pen and pad. She points out that she reads everything on the internet and won't forget what they said.

In "Pedestal," Fergie is standing up for herself and not letting anyone put her down or belittle her. She is telling the person to stop being mean and realize what they are doing so that they don't think they are above her anymore. The lyrics and the powerful beat make this song an empowering anthem for anyone who's ever felt like someone was trying to bring them down.
