Dreijer was born on 7 April 1975 in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1994, they formed the indie rock band Honey Is Cool, where they served as the lead vocalist and guitarist. Together with their brother Olof Dreijer, they formed an electronic music duo The Knife in 1999, and have spanned a series of successful and critically acclaimed albums.
What would you do if one decade into your career you suddenly saw one of your songs turned into a worldwide hit, won six Grammis in your native Sweden and your latest release was declared album of the year by one of the world’s most influential music websites? If you’re Karin Dreijer, the answer is to take a couple of years off and return as a solo artist under a new name: Fever Ray.
In Dreijer's's own words: “I had so many songs to record that I just had to make an album. I thought I was going to have a longer break but I guess it will never happen. I can't stop working. My aim was to finish the album and, now that it's done, I'm a bit restless (good that The Knife has an opera to write then). During the last years, I discovered that I like to sing too, so I hope that my newly found live band Fever Ray will make it to the stages next year. We are rehearsing and building something beautiful and brilliant."
Here Before
Fever Ray Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He was wilder than moonlight
He could do it all
Like he'd been here before
Once I had a child
She was smiling like sunshine
She could see it all
Then I had a child
Took his while like northern summer
And he knows it all
Like he's been here before
The lyrics of "Here Before" by Fever Ray depict the uniqueness and intelligence of children. The song highlights three different children and their remarkable qualities. The first verse talks about a boy who was wilder than moonlight, implying that he was exceptionally energetic, playful, and imaginative. The line "He could do it all" refers to his versatility and ability to do anything he put his mind to. The line "Like he'd been here before" suggests that the boy seemed wise beyond his age and had an aura of familiarity or wisdom, as if he had lived through experiences beyond his years.
The second verse talks about a girl, who was as joyous as sunshine and had an exceptional ability to perceive things, almost like a psychic. The line "She could see it all" suggests that she had an uncanny ability to see through people and situations, and sense things that others could not. The line "Like she'd been here before" describes how the girl possessed a level of maturity and insight beyond her years, as if she had already lived through similar experiences before.
The third verse takes a turn towards the melancholic, as it talks about a child who has grown up and lost some of their childlike wonder. The line "Took his while like northern summer" implies that the child's growth seemed abrupt, almost like the fleeting summers in the northern regions of the world. However, the line "And he knows it all, like he's been here before" suggests that even as the child grows older, they still have a sense of familiarity with the world and possess the insight gained from their childhood experiences.
