The negativity in the comments gave me a wry smile. We cry out for innovation, but when we get it our response is "tone wheel organ, yawn". This synth might not be everyone's cup of tea, and the background noise may be a deal-breaker for many, but this thing is so much more than a tone wheel organ, the thought that has gone into every tiny aspect of it deserves recognition. And personally speaking, I totally love the sound of this synth, it's mad, crazy and unique.

I think it should be made togglable. To appeal to masses of audience. so can have it/not have it. does add a kind of musical effect/ambience your right. however as say not everyone will be a fan of constant hmm sound/noise. so choice to have ambient sound or not will be good option.

The ancestor of this instrument is the Telharmonium (1896). The basic idea of using a spinning disk to induce waves goes back that far. But these folks have taken it to a new level.

Don't get me wrong: I bought a Plasma pedal when Gamechanger first came onto the scene & I LOVE the fact they use unusual tech to achieve sound we all want to hear. Much respect for their innovation & creativity. HOWEVER if you are going to ask people to pay serious money for a top level synth, you could at least quieten down the motors. That noise would drive me mad. ANY way Mk3 could have the motor section detachable and connected via ethernet cable so it can be put far away from the main interface of the unit?

Right, is anybody really gonna put up with that terrible whining sound for more than a few minutes? Either you need to put on closed headphones or blast it so loud from the speakers, it overpowers the din. But TBH the synth itself just doesn't sound that special to justify the racket it makes and the very high price. IMO. I didn't hear anything very interesting in this demo.

@@retromograph3893 yes, because they literally resonate at the fundamental audio frequency when you're playing it, it's obviously a unique sounding synth, that's the whole point of it as a concept, you are replacing standard vco's with optical motor drives and they have their own inherent traits like spin up, drift as he mentioned, efficiency band, get lower in the audio spectrum than a standard vco, it's also got a lot of future potential because you can as he pointed out, start introducing magnetic interference to the motor stators and have it affect the wave shape output.

9:52 - It's actually "Blixa Bargeld" (i recently named my new kitty after the man lol) - He's not with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds anymore, but his "main gig" has always been being the frontman of Einstürzende Neubauten, a major band in the early Industrial Music scene. It makes sense he'd bring experimental instrumentation like that to the Bad Seeds, given Einstürzende Neubauten's frequent use of DIY and found instruments (shit like power tools, giant springs, shopping carts etc. lol).

I've always said you are going to love it or hate it. Yes there is a noise from the motors, quieter at lower octaves I assume because they are spinning slower than higher octaves. Never going to be silent and if you have never flown drones will know this! As an experimental synth it ticks the boxes. If you want a good bog standard synth it's perhaps not for you.

This sounds amazing and so unique! As a guitarist, it's funny hearing people moan about any slight acoustic noise. Do you know how much hiss, hum, fan noise, interference, picking up radio stations etc, we've had to put up with? Just play it through isolating headphones? Problem solved :D

The fan and motors are SOOOOOOOO loud, depending on the patch. Even cuts through my headphones, yikes. I'm glad the loudness of the motors was addressed. I can see some being turned off by that, but the output sound is pretty ridiculous, so I am ABSOLUTELY keeping mine. I love it!! In fact, I might even just sample the motor sounds and make patches out of those, lol!!

You can emulate this sound by using a cheaper synth and running a hair dryer at the same time. Put the hair dryer in a drawer for extra high frequency roll off.

That's exactly the issue I've noticed. A longer time ago I had a Deepmind12 on my desk. A really good thing (not all is bad from Behringer 😉). But the fan noise, though very silent, made me to sell the Deepmind.
Nevertheless new approaches are always welcome ... therefore SOMA is "my" company when in search for unconventional gear.
