Stay Gold
First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun shone high those few summer days
Left us in a soft, wide-eyed haze
It shone like gold
It shone like gold

But just as the moon, it shines straight
So dawn goes down today
No gold can stay
No gold can stay

What if our hard work ends in despair?
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold

What if to love and be loved's not enough?
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh, gold

We're on our way through rugged land
Top of that mountain we wanted to stand
With hearts of gold
With hearts of gold

But there is only forward, no other way
Tomorrow is your hope at the end of the day
And gold turns gray
And gold turns gray

What if our hard work ends in despair?
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold

What if to love and be loved's not enough?
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh

All of my dreams, they fall and form a bridge
Of memories where I can get back
All of my dreams, they fall and form a bridge
Of memories where I can get back to you

What if our hard work ends in despair?
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold

What if to love and be loved's not enough?
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh, gold

Could stay gold, gold
Stay gold, oh, gold

Overall Meaning

"Stay Gold" by First Aid Kit is a song filled with thought-provoking lyrics and a powerful message about cherishing and holding onto moments of happiness and hope in life. The opening lines set the nostalgic tone for the song, as the singer looks back on a few golden summer days that left her in a hazy state of wonder. The imagery of the sun shining like gold and the moon rising and setting is used to highlight the fleeting nature of life's joyful moments.

The chorus reveals the driving sentiment of the song, which is anxiety about the unknown future and a desire to hold onto happiness as it slips away. The singer asks what will happen if hard work ends in disappointment, or if love isn't enough to sustain her through hardship. She longs for the ability to "stay gold" – to freeze time in a moment of beauty and hope.

Towards the end of the song, the singer reflects on the possibility that memories and dreams are the only way to recapture those moments of gold as they fade into grey. The yearning for something lost or unattainable is a theme that resonates with many people, and the song's message is both melancholy and uplifting. Overall, "Stay Gold" is a poignant reminder to cherish the precious and fleeting moments of joy in life, even as we acknowledge the inevitability of change and loss.

To those unfamiliar with the poem:

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay

~Robert Frost

Robert Frost is my favorite poet.
The only poem I have memorized
is Nothing Gold Can Stay...

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower.
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief.
So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

Lovely homage to Robert.💕

They were so young when they wrote this, mid teens. I’m a parent of a mid-teenager. All I can say is those two sisters got some incredibly good parenting. Their parents gave and/or nurtured in their daughters a faith and confidence in their talent, passion and what they, themselves, valued artistically and musically. As a parent, I am humbled by that every time I listen to this beautiful music.

@benallen1799

Well said, so true...

It's as simple as living the Golden Rule💞 but too hard for most because of the selfish ego

@debysdailydosage3412

A lot of good parents have troubled teens. It's a blessing when they are not.

@jodyfinley9122

@mikialthorvarsson4569
