Master Pretender
First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never thought that I was weak
Always thought I could get hurt pretty bad
Still get up on my own two feet

I always believed that I was free
That I had some sense of integrity
That would rise above whatever tried to change me
But honey now I won't wait
For something to bring me around and smile
'Cause that only sticks for a while
Then I'm back again

Oh, I'm a master pretender

I always knew that I was young
But with a head held high and a shotgun
I could fool almost anyone

I never expected to be struck
By the fatal hands of fortune or by sheer bad luck

By now we won't change
And memories just rearrange
And fall into place
So I'm back again

Oh, I'm a master pretender

All the streets of New York city
Sure it look pretty from way up here
And I was headed home, just found more alone
The further I'd go

I always thought that you'd be here
But shit gets fucked up and people just disappear

So honey now don't be mad
Time has told me it can't be that bad
And if it is, well, big goddamn but I'll stick around

I'll be your master defender

Yeah, I'll stick around
I'll be your master defender

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of First Aid Kit's song "Master Pretender" explore the idea of the vulnerability that we all experience in life. The opening lines of the song set the tone for this theme, as the singer declares that she thought she could never be weak or get hurt, but has found that this is not the case. The singer goes on to discuss her beliefs about freedom and integrity, and how she thought that these things would always protect her from anything that could change her. However, the chorus reveals that this is not the case, and the singer is a "master pretender" - someone who puts on a facade for the world.

Throughout the song, the singer reflects on the challenges and disappointments she has faced in life, such as losing people she thought she could count on and feeling alone in a busy city. However, she also acknowledges that even in the face of these struggles, she will not give up or let them define her. Instead, she vows to be a "master defender" for those she cares about - someone who will stick around and offer support no matter what.

Overall, "Master Pretender" is a powerful exploration of the fragility of human existence and our need to find strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

These Siblings don't sugarcoat reality. Sometimes, these two words describes life like no other two words fully can. As you, me, them and most everyone have experienced in life, people come and go. Sometimes for us, it can be very painful to loose different one's that have crossed our paths in life. For some other people, for whatever reason, it's a welcoming event to lose that someone 'not so special'.
I wholeheartedly want to believe in the afterlife so much that hopefully, somehow, those 'special' people I have known once, I will know again.

A never ending beginning.
