John Watts recorded and performed as 'John Watts' during 1981-83 before forming The Cry in 1984. Watts later continued with a new incarnation of Fischer-Z in 1987, with him being the only original member. Albums were released with a similar line-up until 1995 when John Watts returned to being 'J M Watts', 'Watts' and John Watts. In 2002 the moniker was revived once more for the album "Ether". There was a 2004 reunion of the original band for one short show which featured on the Garden Party DVD which was released along with the Fischer-Z Highlights 1979-2004 25th anniversary compilation album.
After this John continued performing and recording solo with the most recent album being 2005's 'Real Life Is Good Enough', "It Has To Be" (2006) and "Morethanmusic & Films" (2009).
In august 2010 John Watts had a couple of shows in the Netherlands with his current band (Sam Walker on drums and Matthew Gest on keyboard) playing good old Fischer-Z repertoire. He presented this band as "the new Fischer-Z". Though John Watts focuses on his solo efforts more than on Fischer-Z (no new releases under that name) lately he revives the band when concert tent to be focused on that period of his live.
Bathroom Scenario
Fischer-Z Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I find birthpills in the bathroom.
Part of the scenery.
Have you had one today?
No longer shocking.
The inside of handbags.
Used to be hidden.
Now out on display.
Professional women
Who work for a living.
Run through their washing.
When they come home at night.
Jars of cosmetics.
Open and oozing.
Petroleum jelly.
Like turkish delight.
Modern World how I hate it.
Modern World you can take it.
Modern World your magic's gone for me.
Where's the mystery that there used to be.
No more escaping
You're caught in the crossfire.
See yourself naked
As you stand on the scales.
No more illusions
Under strip lighting.
So heartless and truthful.
It tells you no lies.
Modern World...you can take it.
Modern World...how I hate it.
Modern World...your magic's gone for me.
Where's the mystery that there used to be.
The lyrics of Bathroom Scenario by Fischer-Z comment on the modern world's loss of mystery and privacy. The singer discusses how they find birth control pills in every bathroom they go to, suggesting that women's choices regarding their bodies and sexuality are no longer taboo subjects. The singer also notes how professional women, who were once expected to conceal their beauty products, now display them openly in their bags. The chorus repeats the sentiment that the singer hates the modern world, with its harsh realities that offer no illusions and no mystery.
The song seems to be commenting on the loss of privacy and the continued normalization of once-taboo topics in society. The singer notes that the modern world has exposed so much that was once kept private or hidden away, leading to a lack of wonder or magic in everyday life. The harsh realities of life, like staring at oneself naked on the scales or the ubiquitous presence of birth control, emphasize the loss of privacy and individuality in society. The song's overall message seems to be a longing for more mystery and less harsh reality in the world.
