Foi revelado pelo chamado Clube da Esquina nos anos 60. Participou do grupo musical O Terço, antes de se formar o 14 Bis e pelo qual fez sucesso durante o inicio dos anos 80. Posteriormente seguiu carreira solo.

Compôs ou interpretou sucessos como Linda Juventude, Planeta Sonho, Nuvens, Caçador de Mim e Clube da Esquina. Espanhola, composta em conjunto com Guarabyra, da dupla Sá & Guarabyra, é sua música mais conhecida e foi um grande hit em 1986/1987, sendo gravada por um grande número de cantores em vários países. Da carreira-solo, destacam-se, entre outras músicas, Princesa, além de participações mais recentes em trilhas-sonoras de novelas, como Paisagem da Janela, Mais uma Vez (com Renato Russo) e Todo Azul do Mar.
