New to Nashville's singer-songwriter scene is artist Fleurie, the musical moniker of Lauren Strahm, a 24-year-old hailing from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. The French word, meaning "in bloom" was chosen by the artist herself, who wanted an alias that accurately represented her sound. With an array of musical influences, including Coldplay, Imogen Heap, Dashboard Confessional, and The Fray, Strahm cites that her goal in writing every song is staying honest and true to the sound within her and the story being told.
The first EP from Fleurie, Fear & Fable, was released in October of 2013. Though it bears some darker tones thematically and lyrically, Strahm manages to deliver them softly and quite vulnerably to the listener. Fear & Fable is a collection of carefully constructed stories inhabiting haunting melodies woven through organic sounds - very much so a minimalist approach but with sonic depth.
Since moving to Nashville and the release of Fear & Fable, Fleurie has been at work exploring new sonic landscapes and delving into writing the part of the story she finds herself journeying now. Fleurie has a new EP in the works for release spring/summer of 2015.

Breathe
Fleurie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Echoes beneath
Angels and skylines meet
And I'm straining to reach
The light on the surface
Light on the otherside
I feel the pages turning
I see the candle burning down
Before my wild eyes
I feel you holding me
Tighter, I cannot see
When will we finally
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
I feel the pages turning
I see the candle burning down
Before my eyes
Before my wild eyes
I feel you holding me
Tighter, I cannot see
When will we finally
Breathe
Breathe

In Fleurie's song Breathe, the lyrics depict a sense of longing for something beyond reach. The song starts with the singer hearing sounds from beneath accompanied by the meeting of angels and skylines. This can be interpreted as the song's protagonist longing for something ethereal or of a higher power. They are then shown straining to reach the light on the surface, symbolizing their desire to attain this thing that they long for. The words "Light on the otherside" might be referencing religious beliefs since some people believe that there is an afterlife or an existence in heaven.
The following section talks about the turning of pages and the slow burning of a candle. This imagery might symbolize the passing of time, the limitation of the time we have, and the urgency to attain what we long for before it's too late. The phrase 'wild eyes' suggests that the singer is in a state of desperation, making it difficult for them to focus on anything. The lines "I feel you holding me, tighter, I cannot see" indicate that there is someone close to the singer, but that they still can't seem to relax and focus.
The chorus, which is repeated several times and to which the song owes its title, talks about the desperation to finally breathe. This repetition emphasizes the urgency of the situation and the desire to attain the thing that the singer longs for. The use of the word 'finally' suggests that the singer has been struggling for a while and is looking towards a resolution.
Overall, Breathe is a song that depicts a sense of longing that is difficult to attain. It speaks to the limitations of time and urgency, as well as the need for something beyond the tangible. The themes are open to interpretation, and the lyrics can resonate differently with different people.
