August
Flipturn Lyrics

Tasted sweeter with you
Sticky fingers
From your own residue
Do you remember
You used to breathe so loud
Do you remember
And it sounded so damn good
And it tastes just like it should
We don't talk about it
We don't have the time
We thought love was something
We weren't meant to find
But now you're a stranger
And I'm still July
But don't you remember
August, honey, you were mine
Well I've loved you from the start
And I've loved you from the start
We don't talk about it
We don't have the time
We thought love was something
We weren't meant to find
But now you're a stranger
And I'm still July
But don't you remember
August, honey, you were mine
Well, you were mine
And you were mine
Well, you were mine
We don't talk about it
We don't have the time
We thought love was something
We weren't meant to find
But now you're a stranger
And I'm still July
But don't you remember
August, honey, you were mine
In this song, Flipturn reminisces about a past relationship that ended abruptly but was incredibly sweet while it lasted. The singer recalls how the month of August tasted sweeter with their partner and how they had sticky fingers from each other's residues, perhaps from holding hands or touching. These nostalgic reminders make the singer feel like it was a long time ago, and now they don't talk about it because they don't have the time. They thought love was something they were not meant to find, but when he had it, it tasted just like it should. The singer also refers to how their partner used to breathe so loud, which evokes a unique memory of their time together. Despite their current circumstances, the singer still feels like their partner was theirs once and remembers how sweet things were in August.
It appears that the relationship ended unceremoniously or without warning because the singer refers to their ex-partner as a stranger. Although they are unsure of where this sudden end came from, the singer still feels a strong connection to those sweet moments. The singer desperately holds onto those memories of sweetness despite the fact that the other person has moved on. The lines “But don’t you remember, August, honey, you were mine” suggest that the singer hopes that their ex-partner has not forgotten about their time together in August. Overall, the song conveys a sense of fragility, highlighting how easy it is for a relationship to disappear and how often people yearn for what is lost.

This is what Dillon said in an interview about the song: "August is based off a relationship I had in my life where things seemed to only work out in the month of August. In that month everything was perfect and seemed like it would last forever. Yet outside that one month everything would fall apart until ironically the next August. The song is supposed to reflect on how in life we come across people that at times are the closest people to us and know us better than anyone, then at another they become complete strangers."
