Without a Sound
Fly Lyrics

You scream so loud
Making promises you'll never keep
Without the doubt
You'd blow your mind out
If I poured you six bullets
So don't make the same mistake
My old man said
So how do you know who I am
Anymore my friend
I'll bet, do you remember, yeah
I'll bet, do you remember
When we used to think
We could take on the world
If they just gave us a chance
So don't make the same mistake
My old man said
Once before I was like you now
So how do you know who I am?
Who I am
Who I am
Who I am
And I said don't make the same mistake
My old man said
Once before I was like you now
So how do you know who I am
Who I am
Who I am
The lyrics of "Without a Sound" by Fly, describe the internal battle of someone who is struggling to keep their promises or fulfill their goals, without facing any kind of doubt. The opening line "Without a sound, you scream so loud, making promises you'll never keep" sheds light on the hollowness of one's commitments, which are so loud and attention-grabbing that they often overshadow the lack of willingness or capability to fulfill them. The following line "Without a doubt, you'd blow your mind out if I poured you six bullets" talks about the disastrous consequences of continuing down the path of unfulfilled promises without facing any inner skepticism. The lyrics then shift towards words of wisdom passed down by the singer's father, who warns him not to make the same mistakes he did in the past.
The chorus then asks a rhetorical question, "So how do you know who I am anymore, my friend?", signifying the confusion and loss of self-identity one can experience when their promises and ambitions fail. The singer reminisces about a time when they believed they could take on the world by simply being given a chance to prove themselves. However, with experience and maturity, they have learned the fleeting nature of grandiose words without solid action. In the end, they advise the listener not to repeat the same mistakes they have, and ask "So how do you know who I am?" as a reminder to stay grounded and true to oneself.
