Then a cloud came and it got dark
Through the light taste of spring, I could smell cheap wine
Which some people typically drank neath the no alcohol sign
Couldn't seem to get the day through
It ain't over, baby blue
I won't say that it's not true
A light rain fell over Belfast town
Old men were smoking in the alley at around three
On the autumn wind, I heard a mother sigh
Somewhere in the distance, I could hear children crying
I couldn't seem to get the day through
It ain't over, baby blue
I won't say that it's not true
Like a regular Mathieu Delarue
The moon shone bright, but what floored me
The alluring beauty of the shadows cast by the trees
Like a noble knight stood an old church spire
And the air was filled with smoke from the night fires
I couldn't seem to get the day through
It ain't over, baby blue
Won't say that it's not true
Like a regular Mathieu Delarue
(It ain't over)
(It ain't over)
(It ain't over)
(It ain't over)
Oh well, I tried, I cried and I filled the pages (it ain't over)
It ain't over, baby blue (it ain't over)
Words, they made me ageless
It ain't over, baby blue (it ain't over)
Fire burned up love and rage
It ain't over, baby blue (it ain't over)
I bent the bars and fled the cage, yet
It ain't over
The lyrics to Foy Vance's song "It Ain't Over" paint a picture of different scenes and emotions experienced by the singer. The first paragraph describes a sunny day in Botanic Park that suddenly turns dark as a cloud passes overhead. Despite the lightness of spring, there is a hint of sadness in the air, symbolized by the smell of cheap wine being consumed in defiance of the "no alcohol" sign. The singer couldn't seem to find a way to get through the day, but suggests that it isn't over, drawing a comparison to "Mathieu Delarue," possibly a reference to a determined and persistent individual.
In the second paragraph, the scene shifts to Belfast town, where a light rain is falling. The atmosphere is filled with the presence of older men smoking in an alley, creating a nostalgic or somber mood. The singer also hears a mother's sigh and the distant sound of children crying, indicating a sense of sadness and hardship. Again, the singer expresses their struggle to overcome the difficulties of the day, but maintains that it isn't over, drawing the parallel to "Mathieu Delarue" once more.
The third paragraph presents a different setting, where the moon shines brightly and casts alluring shadows created by the trees. The singer is captivated by the beauty of an old church spire, standing tall like a noble knight. The air is filled with the smoke from night fires, adding a hint of mystery and perhaps even danger. Just like before, the singer finds it challenging to navigate the day but remains resilient, resembling "Mathieu Delarue."
The final part of the song reflects on the singer's personal journey. They have tried, cried, and poured their heart out onto countless pages, suggesting their commitment to expressing themselves through writing. Despite the challenges, the singer believes that it isn't over. The words they have written have preserved their essence, making them ageless. The fire within them has consumed their love and rage, leading them to break free from their metaphorical cage. They affirm that it still isn't over, echoing the recurring theme throughout the song.
Overall, "It Ain't Over" explores moments of struggle, sadness, and resilience in various settings. The lyrics convey a sense of determination, emphasizing the notion that even in the face of adversity, there remains hope and the possibility of overcoming obstacles. The repeated reference to "Mathieu Delarue" adds a touch of enigma and invites the listener to relate to this relentless spirit.
