Signs of Life
Foy Vance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Then without warning, you looked in my eyes
I could tell that soon a sun was sure to rise
Every morning, time after time

No longer longing all through the night
No more need to muster up a fight
Just you becoming and the passing of time
All through the ages, we die, we're born
It matters not how far we run, we all return to form
Take empty stages without an ounce of fear
See, you and I, we started out from nothing, now we're here

Spark like a fire, lick like a flame
But there's no need for them to know your name
Don't dare get tired 'til you hear the last bell ring

Don't ever lie there, don't be afraid to cry
There's no need to even wonder why
It's just you becoming and the passing of time

All through the ages, we die, we're born
It matters not how far we run, we all return to form
Take empty stages without an ounce of fear
See, you and I, we started out from nothing, now we're here
Don't let it overcome, don't let the hours grow long
'Cause we are only here a while and we're such a long time gone

All through the ages, we die, we're born
It matters not how far we run, we all return to form
Take empty stages without an ounce of fear
See, you and I, we started out from nothing, now we're here

Don't let it overcome, don't let the hours grow long
'Cause we are only here a while and we're such a long time gone

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song captures a moment of connection between two people. The singer describes how someone looked into their eyes and they could sense that a new day was about to begin. This person's presence brings a sense of hope and anticipation, and the repetition of "Every morning, time after time" implies a feeling of consistency and comfort that comes with their presence.

The second verse speaks of a transformation that occurs when this person enters the singer's life. They no longer feel the longing and loneliness they once experienced through the night. There is no need to fight anymore, as this person's presence brings a sense of completion and fulfillment. Again, the passing of time is emphasized as a natural part of life, and with each passing day, the singer becomes more connected to this person.

The chorus delves into the universal theme of life and death. It suggests that throughout history, human beings have experienced cycles of life and death, and regardless of how far we may try to distance ourselves from it, we ultimately return to our original form. The mention of "empty stages" may symbolize the transient nature of life and the need to face each moment with courage, without fear. The reference to the singer and the person they are singing to starting from nothing and now being "here" implies a sense of accomplishment and growth.

The bridge of the song emphasizes individuality and the importance of embracing one's true self. The metaphor of a fire and a flame suggests that one's true essence can shine bright without needing external validation or recognition. It encourages the person being addressed to not lose energy or become weary until they have heard their final call or until their time is up. It also encourages emotional vulnerability, emphasizing that it's okay to cry and that there is no need to question or analyze the reasons behind it, as it is simply part of the process of becoming who they are meant to be.

The final chorus reinforces the message that life is transient and we all go through the cycle of birth and death. It doesn't matter how far we may try to run or escape this cycle, we all eventually return to it. The mention of "empty stages" once again reminds us of the temporal nature of life, urging us to face each moment without fear. The line "Don't let it overcome, don't let the hours grow long" serves as a reminder to live fully and not let time slip away without experiencing everything life has to offer. The ending line emphasizes the brevity of our time on Earth and the need to make the most of it, as we are only here for a little while in the grand scheme of things.

Dear Mr. Vance,
I’ve been writing for 50 years.
Trying to write this song!
A masterpiece of beauty, complexity, and harmony rendered to its last but not least common denominator.... all wrapped in a voice that easily reminds us of the past, yet transcends generations to come.
The angels assigned this joyous burden to you and I understand why.
.......hearing your voice for the first time singing this while I was sweating in the sun, finishing up my wooden fence last week..... seemed like an anthem for that moment, that hour,.... the clarity the pandemic teased me with... had arrived in your verse ..... and underlined in your chorus! I’ve given 3 couples this song last week........to listen to.......together!

The tears of joy/ sorrow flowed and stopped me in my tracks! Thankfully there was roll of paper towels nearby.

I anticipate carrying a few handkerchiefs to your concert when you bless us in Chicago with your appearance sir.

Your vocals, arrangements, and depth of understanding were surely born of pain.
As you say: “just you becoming with the passing of time “.

Your brilliant lyric about what I thought was the literal” SUN” rising, you were actually referring to your pregnant wife, one day giving birth to your” SON”!!!
Only true poets receive this information of such magnitude from just a glance
“ without warning “ from your woman;
making the momentary premonition all the more prophetic!!

It’s hard to produce age wine that clear from the cellars inside us.
But..... now that I know your name, I know where to go to have a verbal sip..... of the real vintage stuff.
God bless you..... and your musical vineyard dear sir.
Share with us thirsty ones.....
...... before were..... “a longtime gone.”

@Willy Kayak .....Just found Mr. Vance yesterday singing this song while finishing up a 200 ft fence at home.

What a heavenly treat that caused me to stop in my tracks!
If been writing songs for over 45 years and when one comes along like this......

well...... it’s a prayer.... of sorts.... and..
when it arrives.. wrapped in perfect timing, timbre, and enharmonic’s as this diamond.... it moves people to get as close to truth as possible because we are sooo thirsty..... here in life’s desert.

Yes...
I remember drooling endless hours over album liner notes....
But..... if someone should copy
the lyrics down wrong out of sheer excitement.... that’s fine!
I have done it and.... when the song is that powerful.... even the wrong lyrics seem to have deep meaning.
..... it’s all coming from a tender space.
So, very glad to have found this amazing singer! ...... a truly needed gift... for 2021.
Be well, friend.
