Quel traguardo volante ti vide in manette
The song "Il Bandito E Il Campione" by Francesco De Gregori tells a story of two boys who grew up together in a small town where bicycling is a passion. They shared the love for the sport and competed against each other, but their competition was also foreshadowing the distance that would eventually grow between them. One of them, Sante, becomes a bandit and uses his skills as a bicyclist to evade the police by shooting out street lamps while racing on his bike. The other, Girardengo, becomes a champion cyclist but is unaware of Sante's life as a criminal. The song highlights the contrasts between their lives as well as the inevitability of fate.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of justice and the idea that sometimes individuals seek retribution for wrongs they feel have been done to them, but in doing so they themselves become lawbreakers. Sante becomes a bandit because of "antica miseria" (ancient misery) or because of "un torto subito" (a wrong suffered), suggesting that he may have turned to a life of crime because of hardship or a sense of injustice. However, in seeking to right wrongs, he himself becomes a criminal and is eventually caught by the police.
Overall, the song is a commentary on the human condition and the different paths in life that people can take. It suggests that even those who start out with the same dreams and passions can end up in vastly different places, and that fate has a way of intervening regardless of our desires.
