One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The one I love belongs to somebody else
She means her tender songs for somebody else
And even when I have my arms around her
I know her thoughts are strong for somebody else
The hands I held belong to somebody else
I'll bet they're not so cold to somebody else
It's tough to be alone on the shelf
It's worse to fall in love by yourself
The one I love belongs to somebody else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey's "One I Love" convey a sense of longing for a special someone who has not yet been found. The singer is experiencing an extended period of loneliness where daydreams have led to nothing. But, they remain hopeful that one day the person they are meant to be with will come along and rescue them from their solitude. The lyrics express a deep longing for companionship, dreaming of the day when their fate will lead them to the person they are destined to be with. This sense of hope and desire runs throughout the song, culminating in a prayer to the moon above to "please be kind and find the one I love."

The lyrics of "One I Love" are a wonderful example of how music can convey powerful emotions and connect with an audience in profound ways. Through the words, the song captures the experience of feeling disconnected and alone while maintaining a sense of hope for a brighter future. Thus, making it an excellent representation of the romantic ballads during the 1940s.

The one I love belongs to somebody else
She means her tender songs for somebody else
And even when I have my arms around her
I know her thoughts are strong for somebody else
The hands I hold belong to somebody else
I'll bet they're not so cold to somebody else
It's tough to be alone on the shelf
It's worse to fall in love by yourself
The one I love belongs to somebody else
What else?
Well, the one I love belongs to somebody else
(Man, like that, you ain't nowhere)
That's why she sings her tender songs to somebody else
(Ah, boo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo)
And even when I have my arms around her (Well, then?)
You know her thoughts are for somebody else
And when I hold her hands (you know)
They belong to someone (someone)
Somebody else (And you can bet)
They're not so cold for somebody else
Well, it's tough to be alone on the shelf
It's worse to be in love by yourself
Like when the one you love belongs to somebody else

I totally agree with you, catman! This was one of Sinatra's best efforts. He was in top form, and the Sy Oliver arrangements brought out the best in him! This closing song on the LP is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting this selection.

Frank Sinatra's jazzy, foot tapping, superb performance of Isham Jones/Gus Kahn's wonderful quick tempo romantic ballad, "The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else". Sy Oliver conducted & arranged the orchestra & gave great support to Mr Sinatra, & raised this musical episode to supreme heights. Frank Sinatra & Sy Oliver's superb performances, made this musical extravaganza, amazing entertainment. Frank Sinatra's performance was outstanding. His delivery with perfect interpretation & timing, a hint of quick tempo jazz element, in cohesion with Tommy Dorsey's orchestra was superb & total perfection. In my opinion, this is the best recording of this delightful romantic ballad. Golden words by Peter Farrar.

You are most welcome, Maureen. I think that this is one of Sinatra's underrated albums. It features some great songs and first rate arrangements by Sy Oliver.
