The Future
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Alto solo by Beverly Jenkins]
(chorus)
[Gonna find me a gypsy and get my fortune told,]
[I'm gonna find me a gypsy and get my fortune told.]
[I'm gonna say please, missus gypsy, tell me what the future will hold.]
(Hurry your deck of cards and your crystal ball)
(For there you will see that you will pray for light)
(The future will almost certainly be whatever you want it to be,)
(But with rockets and picks, from music and jetsam)
(There's no butt that you can push, and push,)
(Let your imagination burst into flame)
(And it will let you do whatever you damn well to do, do,do).

Given a choice I would choose to have a magic wand that I could use,
To draw a melody, from that enchanted blade of grass
And cheese and wood and wind and sea.
I would stand there, dig a grave, and quietly say,

Ladies and Gentlemen, play for me, play for me.
(and the orchestra plays a beautiful melody)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Frank Sinatra's song "Future" speak about finding a gypsy to get their fortune told. The persona in the song, likely feeling lost or uncertain about their path, seeks direction and clarity about what the future holds. What follows is a powerful message about the power of imagination and manifestation.

Although the gypsy may provide some insight, ultimately, the future is what we make of it. The chorus reminds us that with dedication and hard work, we can create whatever future we desire. The lines, "But with rockets and picks, from music and jetsam, there's no butt that you can push, and push. Let your imagination burst into flame, and it will let you do whatever you damn well to do, do, do" emphasize the importance of using our creativity and just going for it. We hold the power to make our dreams a reality.

The song's bridge offers a contrast to the previous section's message of taking charge of one's future. It speaks of a hypothetical scenario where the persona would choose to have a magic wand to draw music from nature's elements. This serves as a reminder that even though we hold the power to shape our future, it is also essential to appreciate the beauty and magic of life itself. The final lines, "Ladies and Gentlemen, play for me, play for me," show that we all have a role to play in the grand symphony of life.

Overall, "Future" offers a message of empowerment and creativity, reminding us that we can create the future we desire through hard work and determination.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

on Try a Little Tenderness

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
