Frankie Beverly started out singing gospel music in church as a schoolboy in Philadelphia. He has claimed that his first professional gig was a tour with The Silhouettes (famous for their 1958 hit Get A Job) when he was only twelve years old, but this is disputed by those associated with the group, whose members were never known to mention him while they were alive.[1]
As a teenager he formed The Blenders, a short-lived a cappella, doo-wop group that were influenced by The Dells, The Moonglows, and The Del Vikings. After that outfit dissolved, he founded The Butlers, which would be the first group he recorded with in 1963. As time passed, they caught the attention of the veteran producer Kenny Gamble, who eventually released recordings by the group.
It turned out that music performed by The Butlers did not fit into the "Philly Sound", and after some heavy touring, the group relocated to California. The unit was re-christened as Raw Soul and caught the attention of a sister-in-law to Marvin Gaye. He was so enamored by the act, he had them as an opening act at his shows. Gaye also convinced Beverly to have the band's name changed to Maze.
Beverly's onstage attire (all-white casual clothing, including slacks, long-sleeved shirt, and a baseball cap) has become his signature dress style over the years.

I wouldn't be right here if you hadn't been right there
Southern girl your the one lots of lovin lots of fun
The tenderness you give me I wanna take it everywhere
I wasn't happy not at all
You were the first to here my call
Your hospitality shows me that you care
Sure know how to tree me you just make me feel so good
Southern girl here's to you no one can do it like you do
Girl you be so sweet I just always knew you would
Girl you love me from the start from the bottom of your heart
Came along a heard my song
Southern girl southern girl
Southern girl southern girl
Girl you keep me satisfided
Always right there by my side
Girl there's one thing you should know
That I really dig you so
Southern girl don't you know ya good to me and I dig you so
I wouldn't be right here if you hadn't been right there
Southern girl southern girl
Southern girl southern girl
The lyrics to Frankie Beverley/Maze's song “Southern Girl” express gratitude and love to a woman from the Southern United States. The recurring line “Southern girl, don't you know you're good to me and I dig you so”, highlights the admiration he has for her. The lyrics celebrate the sweetness, hospitality, and tenderness the woman provides, making the singer feel loved and satisfied.
The song’s lyrics create a vivid image of his experience in the South, particularly with women from the region. The reference to the Mason-Dixon line in the second verse highlights the division between the North and South during the Civil War period. The line: “Down there where the girls are fine, sure know how to treat me, you just make me feel so good”, reveals the singer's appreciation for the women from the region. Despite possibly being from a different cultural background, he enjoys the hospitality and warm reception he has received from the woman. The closing lines of “Southern girl, southern girl, girl you keep me satisfied, always right there by my side” indicate his intention to stick with her, which supports the notion that she is a significant person in his life.
