Jalousie
Frankie Laine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jealousy, night and day you torture me
I sometimes wonder if this spell that I'm under
Can only be a melody for I know no one but me
Has won your heart but when the music starts

My peace departs
From the moment they play that lovely strain
And we surrender to all its charm again
This jealousy that tortures me is ecstasy, mystery, pain

We dance to a tango of love
Your heart beats with mine as we sway
Your eyes give the answer I'm dreaming of
That soft word your cruel lips will never say

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend
To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
But it's only a tango you love

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend

To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
And it's only a tango you love, it's only a tango that you love

Overall Meaning

Frankie Laine's song "Jalousie" is a poignant portrayal of the torment and agony of jealousy. The lyrics speak of the unending pain that comes with being jealous, which torments the singer, night and day. He wonders if his infatuation with his lover can only be attributed to the song or if there is genuinely some connection. The singer confesses that he is the only person who can win his lover's heart, but when the music starts, his peace disappears. The words "From the moment they play that lovely strain, And we surrender to all its charm again, This jealousy that tortures me is ecstasy, mystery, pain" signify that the emotions that the music conjures up are too strong for the singer to control, and the experience can be both pleasurable and painful.

After hearing
this magnificently
recorded video,
no point in search-
ing further. Frankie
Laine will always
own this one, as
with everything he
ever had a hit recording of. I generally don't care for "song stylists," who often take too
many liberties and
get to cute for my
taste. Just sing
the song straight,
like Tony Martin,
Jack Jones, Jerry
Wallace, Jim Reeves, Johnny
Desmond, and Vic
Damone did, and
let the lyrics speak
for themselves. But I make an exception for Frankie Laine, and
like the extra spin
and force and emotion he put
into interpreting
a song. I was 6 years old when
this was released
and well remember it. A.M
radio was the you
tube of its era. For
years you couldn't
go up and down
the band without
encountering a
Frankie Laine song being broadcast from
some station. It
was a wonderful
time to be alive.

Frankie Lane was the most popular singer many decades ago. He has great power & range, when he wants to use it. He has a rare personal style & a unique way to interpret a song, which made him an international super star. His powerful & explosive electrifying performance of Jacob Garde's deceitful romantic ballad, "Jealousy," was outstanding & raised this music to supreme levels. In my opinion, this is the best recording of this music & one step ahead of Kathryn Grayson's version . It is certainly compulsive listening to Frankie Làne with this ballad.
I admire his musical talent, & I am a great fan of Mr Lane. A rather belated(8yrs ago) thank you to Nancy Floressantos, for this video, it is obvious we are in complete cohesion in respect of beautiful music. Golden words of appreciation of the unique musical talent of Frankie Lane, by Peter E. Farrar.

Frankie Laine came to visit us here in Australia towards the end of his career. He appeared on a TV program but because the show was running behind time the camera threw to him without a proper introduction. We were all wondering who was this senior gentleman with his cowboy hat and sitting on a couch.

Then the music started and this booming voice started .....Rollin Rollin Rollin, Keep them dogies goin RAWHIDE. Nobody was in any doubt, it was the unmistakable voice...and he brought the house down.
