The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their debut album Franz Ferdinand which entered the UK album chart at #3. The band went on to win the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. NME named Franz Ferdinand as their Album of the Year. From the album, three top-ten singles were released, "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée" and "This Fire". The band has also received several Grammy Award nominations.
The band is named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination was one of the main reasons for the start of the First World War. The band decided on the name after seeing a racehorse named Archduke Ferdinand win the Northumberland Plate in 2001, eventually coming to the decision as the alliteration and sound of the name appealed to them.

Your Diary
Franz Ferdinand Lyrics

What more is it that I could be, if you move away from me
You on that train, I was alone in your room
When there on the floor, I saw a little black book
You left it there on the floor, open and evidence
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
You couldn't say why you loved him
He's asking you why you loved him
You couldn't say why you loved him
But he gave you a list of all the reasons why he did
And you couldn't reply but you could say that you did
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
(I'm back)
He said he had lips like petals unfurling from a bud
I could have ripped page and petals, ripped to the blood
Ripped until ripping was all it was good
But I didn't and don't want you ever to read
Any diary of mine and word I may leave now
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
Your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
Your diary, your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
(I'm back)
Your diary, your diary, your diary, open and inviting me back
(I'm back)
The lyrics of Franz Ferdinand's song 'Your Diary' tell a story of a person who finds a diary left behind by their lover. The person becomes curious and reads the diary despite knowing that it's wrong to do so. The diary entries reveal that the lover couldn't explain why they loved their previous partner, but the partner had given a list of reasons why they loved them. The diary-reader becomes jealous and angry, and the lyrics suggest violent thoughts and tendencies towards destroying the diary. However, instead of acting on that impulse, they decide to leave and never write a diary of their own.
The lyrics of the song explore the themes of jealousy, betrayal, and the invasion of privacy, and the dark thoughts that accompany these emotions. The song suggests that reading another person's diary can be a destructive act, as it can reveal information that should have remained private. The lyrics also suggest that keeping a diary can be dangerous, as it can give away personal information that others may use against us. Ultimately, the song implies that love can be a messy and complicated business, and that we should be careful to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
