Over My Head
Fray (The) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never knew
I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a cue
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke, and who's still standing when it clears

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Let's rearrange
I wish you were a stranger; I could disengage
Say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that's disregard
Find another friend, and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

And suddenly I become a part of your past
I'm becoming the part that don't last
I'm losing you, and it's effortless
Without a sound we lose sight of the ground
In the throw around
Never thought that you wanted to bring it down
I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows
She's on your mind
Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
I'm in over my head
I'm in over my

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime

She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Over My Head" by The Fray is a ballad about feeling overwhelmed and lost in a situation where there seems to be no way out. The singer is struggling to come to terms with the fact that everything around him is falling apart and that he can't seem to find any support or help from those closest to him. He feels like he's in a game of chicken, where everyone is waiting for someone else to make the first move, and he's left out in the cold. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is desperate to find a way to escape his current situation yet finds no solace in the world around him.

The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, where the singer admits, "Everyone knows I'm in over my head." This line encapsulates the feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt that plague the singer throughout the song. He's struggling to balance his feelings of loyalty to those around him and his own need for self-preservation. The lyrics suggest that he knows what he needs to do to get out of the situation he's in, but the fear of the unknown is holding him back. Overall, the song is a powerful reflection on the struggles that we all face at one point or another when we feel like we're in too deep and can't see a way out.

in an interview the lead singer was asked who the kid was on the video. He said it was his little brother and the only thing that would make him do the video is if he bought him a PS2 lol.

The older I get , the better the entire How to Save a Life really gets. The Fray really is under appreciated

@timothyyoon7634

How to Save a life, you found me, happiness
those three were on repeat when I first tried and contemplated with the idea of suicide.
I am not scared of pain, I been through the WORST kind of pain someone can imagine.
My only thought was the PAIN other people get, the blow back if I die.
Most people are worried about the pain they might feel during it,
i feel about all the people I might let down.

@marklindsey4408

I agree this is my favorite band and I am in 2020

@amandakaysen8847

The fray helped me through some pretty dark times too.
I actually have to broken light bulb from the album cover tattooed on my arm bc of how much they mean to me, and that they’ve been my favorite band so long. <3
