I'll Be Hard to Handle
Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be hard to handle
I promise you that
And if you complain
Here's one little Jane that will leave you flat
I'll be hard to handle
What else can I be?
Just ask my Dad the trouble he had controlling me
I have faults, to be specific
In a temper, oh, I'm terrific
I throw chairs and tables and I never miss

Oh I'm as cold as in a shell fish
I tell lies, I'm mean, I'm selfish
Think it over, my warning is this

I'll be hard to handle
I'm making it plain
Now just be a dear
And scram out of here, 'cause I'm going to raise Cain

I'm as cold as in a shell fish
I tell lies, I'm mean, I'm selfish
Think it over, my warning is
If you want to be sveet, huh!

I'll be hard to handle
I'm making it plain

Now just be a dear
And scram out of here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I'll Be Hard To Handle" are a playful warning to a potential lover from a woman who admits to being difficult to handle. She confidently asserts that she'll be hard to control and that the person she's addressing should leave now if they can't handle it. The reference to "Jane" leaving her partner flat is an allusion to the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" and her devotion to Daddy Warbucks. The woman refers to past behavior that she claims makes her difficult to be in a relationship with - her temper and tendency to throw furniture, as well as lying and being selfish.

While the lyrics might seem flippant and perhaps even a bit cruel, they are delivered with a buoyant and playful melody that epitomizes the era of 1935 when Fred and Ginger's film, "Roberta," was released. The song is a lighthearted reflection of the social changes of the 1930s - women's roles in society were shifting, and there was a new sense of freedom that wasn't previously encouraged. In this context, the lyrics take on an extra layer of meaning, as if the woman is announcing her independence and unwillingness to be controlled by anyone. The playful tone of the song means that even as she lists her character faults, it's hard to feel anything but affection for her - she's simply too charming to dislike.

There is no one alive today that could recreate that dance routine. Ginger and Fred were pure perfection.

@OliverJones-go1ur

The dance isn't perfect at all. Watch carefully. Ginger fails to complete spins and is struggling to keep up here and there. It's great to watch, yes it it is, but it isn't a perfect dance by any means.

@@OliverJones-go1ur Wow. You're looking WAY too hard...so critical. Could you do that..?! I don't think so. Quit bringing people down! They adore them and I do too! If we want to say "perfect" then let us.

Agree. But it's also the time period during which it occurred that makes it unique.

Probably one of Astaire and Rogers' snappiest routines. Absolutely perfect.
