I Used to Be Color-Blind
Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How a dreary world can suddenly change
To a world as bright as the evening star
Queer
What a difference when your vision is clear
And you see things as they really are
I used to be color-blind
There's green in the grass
There's gold in the moon
There's blue in the skies
That semi-circle that was always hanging about
Is not a storm cloud, it's a rainbow
And you brought the colors out
Believe me it's really true
Till I met you I never knew
A setting sun could paint such beautiful skies
I never knew there were such lovely colors
And the big surprise
Is the red in your cheeks
The gold in your hair
The blue in your eyes
In the song "I Used to Be Color-Blind", Fred Astaire sings about how meeting someone special has changed his perception of the world around him. He describes how the world used to seem dreary and colorless, but now it is suddenly bright and vibrant. The use of the word "queer" in the second verse is not meant to be offensive, but rather it was a commonly used term during the time the song was written that meant "strange" or "unusual".
The lyrics go on to describe how meeting this person has allowed him to see the beauty in things that he never noticed before. He mentions the green in the grass, the gold in the moon, and the blue in the skies. He also talks about how he used to see a semi-circle in the sky that he thought was a storm cloud, but was actually a rainbow. As he sings, "And you brought the colors out", it's clear that he is crediting his newfound perception of color to the person he has met.
Overall, "I Used to Be Color-Blind" is a sweet and romantic song about how love has the power to change our perspective on the world around us. It reminds us to always keep an open mind and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day.

Intended to be in Technicolor, a high spot like an early talkie c, 1929, but Pandro Berman decided it cost too much. RKO was akready paring cheese. Astaire and Irving Berlin were annoyed, feeling half the point was lost by shooting in b&w, so they began to look towards MGM.

All of their films need to be restored and re-released, but as ever I suspect it’s licensing and demand
