Fred Durst is the lead singer for the band Limp Bizkit. Durst was born in Jacksonville Florida where he grew up with his mother and step-dad - a local police officer.
Durst joined the Navy at the early stage of his life where he found it difficult to cope with the rules there.
He left the Navy to become a tatoo artist where he slummed life until he met KoRn who were on tour at the time. Durst persuaded them to give them a tatoo in a desperate attempt to get to know the band. Durst had been going around to local gigs around Jacksonville where he was looking to recruit band members to "manage". He spoke to Sam Rivers (bassist) who agreed to join Durst and proposed that Rivers' cousin John Otto (drummer) would join to. Durst jumped to the idea and eventually formed "limp bizkit". They could not find a singer so Fred had became the singer of the band unintentionally.
With Durst now friends with KoRn he gave Ross Robinson - KoRn's producer, a demo tape which he loved. Durst began his dream of being a rockstar.
Life in the spotlight hasn't been easy for Durst and has had many rivalries with Eminem, Trent Reznor and a failed "relationship" with Britney Spears.
However now with the band being on a hiatus, Durst is also pursuing his dream of being a film director with a few projects in the pipeline.
Wish You Were Here

heaven from hell
blue skies from pain
can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail
a smile from a veil
do you think you can tell
So, do you think we can change
before its too late
so proud to be free
but who can we blame
don't be ashamed
do you think we can change
How i wish, how i wish you were here
we're a world of lost souls
swimming in a fish bowl
year after year
running over the same old ground
but have we found the same old fears
wish you were here
we don't need, need anymore pain
we just need to remain all on the very same page
so much to gain
no more losing a friend
we're losing ourselves
we just need your help
so glad you're here
so glad you're here.
The song "Wish You Were Here" by Fred Durst is a cover of the classic Pink Floyd song of the same name. The lyrics express a sense of disillusionment with the world and a longing for connection with others. The opening verse questions the ability to distinguish between heaven and hell, pleasure and pain, and truth and deception. This theme continues throughout the song as Durst laments the state of society and the world, and his desire to make a change.
The chorus, which is a famous line from the original Pink Floyd song, expresses a deep sense of loss and loneliness. The line "How I wish, how I wish you were here" is directed to an absent friend or loved one, who may have died, moved away, or simply become emotionally distant. The metaphor of being "lost souls swimming in a fishbowl" suggests the feeling of being trapped and isolated, unable to escape the same patterns of behavior and thought.
The second verse focuses on the possibility for change and the need to work together to make the world a better place. Durst acknowledges the difficulties in bringing about change, but he encourages us not to be ashamed or afraid to try. He ends the song by expressing gratitude for the presence of someone who can provide support and guidance.

This is from a concert in New York City just a few weeks after 9/11/2001. Smoke from the ruins was still drifting across lower Manhattan. Many great artists took part, but Limp Biskit singing this song was the heart-wrenching moment..."wish you were here"....for all the friends, neighbors, family members we lost that day.

How this memory only had ten votes is stunning. Thanks for sharing.

I was a high school senior that year, watching this and it hitting like bricks out of nowhere - all the lyrics seemed to so eerily address every aspect of what had happened and then the emotion of “wish you were here”- on the day I am writing this is the first time I have watched it since despite recalling it often. It’s just how I remember. Feels like we are back full circle to ... well... I will leave my thoughts at that- all the souls we lost these last 20 years...

What a remakable moment memory and deepest condolences to all victims.

This is why Fred Durst is so massively underrated. All of Limp Bizkit is underrated. But Fred gets so much hate, even though he has one of the most unique, authentic styles.
@momagic383
It’s cuz of Eminem’s reference in one of his songs, is my guess. Tbh I didn’t know who Fred Durst was at the time I heard him mentioned. So if that’s your first recollection hearing someone’s name, it clouds your opinion.

20 years ago. Never forget being in the suburbs of NYC hearing the news about the twin towers. All the divisive politics in this country, never forget this was a time this whole country came together after this horrific tragedy. We will always be one, remember that.
