Ånnevik grew up in Ridabu, near Hamar, and was involved in music and theatre during her formative years. In the spring of 2009 she produced a demo with her own songs, and sent it to Grappa Music. This resulted in her receiving the fourth “New Artist Prize” from Grappa Music, following in the footsteps of Siri Nilsen, Gjermund Larsen and Valkyrien Allstars. The jury gave the following ground for awarding the prize to Ånnevik. Ånnevik’s first record, Synlige hjerteslag, was formed together with producer Andreas Mjøs (Jaga Jazzist, Adjagas, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra). It was voted the best Norwegian-language album of the year by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation’s programme “Norsk på Norsk” on the radio station P1, and was featured on lists of the year’s best albums by the TV show “Lydverket” and the newspaper Vårt Land, among others. She presented a very successful concert at the By:Larm festival in 2011, and was the opening act for the artist Odd Nordstoga in several of Norway’s largest cities. Her singles “Strået” and “Snubletråd” were in heavy rotation on the P1 radio programme in 2011. Ånnevik was nominated for a Spellemannspris, the Norwegian Grammy, both as newcomer of the year and in the folk category. She was also the first winner of the “Lyspunkt” award, which was newly established by the Norwegian Lyricist Fund for a first album, and received the Vidar Sandbeck Cultural Award, “Regnbågåbrua”.
In 2012 she received glowing reviews for a joint concert tour throughout south-eastern Norway together with the group Narum, among others, called “Trassviser og Tordenskrell”, a sort of Norwegian dialect version of the Rolling Thunder Revue of the 1970s. Later that year she participated in a project based on the works of poet Hans Børli together with the band “In the Country”, the duet “Akurat hær, akurat nå” together with the artist Ravi, and the song “Revevise” on a tribute album to Thorbjørn Egner, Vi har den ære. She collaborated with Andreas Mjøs on the song “Magefølelsen” for the documentary Beretninger om begynnelser, which was aired on TV2 in the spring of 2012.
Frida Ånnevik’s second album, "Ville Ord", was released in September 2013.

I tau rundt livet
Har jeg en spent løpestreng som
Drar meg strakt inn igjen
Om jeg går for langt ut
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
Piggtråd tredd i meg
Jeg blir ei anna kvass og stram
Når samme tråd dras fram
Og tilbake
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
Det klakker mellom blokkene
Ekkoet av meg
Spør seg hvor jeg har vært
Det stokker seg tvert
For inni meg kommer jeg
Fra samme sted som deg
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
Vi arver ord
Arver ord og vaner
Handlingsrom knust til pinneved
Grensa ble satt innen det
Var altfor sent
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
The lyrics of Frida Ånnevik's song "Skamgang" reflect a sense of confinement and self-imposed limitations. The phrase "Festa i tau, i tau rundt livet" can be interpreted as being tied up or confined in a rope around one's life. The singer describes a tense thread that pulls her back in if she ventures too far out. This can be seen as a metaphor for feeling trapped within societal expectations or personal insecurities.
As the singer mentions taking steps forward, we get a sense of the desire for progression, but there is an obstacle represented by the barbed wire ("Piggtråd tredd i meg"). This line evokes imagery of being sewn into a sewing machine, suggesting a sense of being controlled or manipulated. Despite this, the singer acknowledges that the same thread that restricts her also makes her sharp and determined.
The song continues with the singer moving between buildings, and the echoes question where she has been. This can be seen as a reflection on the confusion and disorientation that comes with deviating from societal norms or personal expectations. The line "For inni meg kommer jeg, fra samme sted som deg" emphasizes the shared human experience and the realization that we all come from the same place, even if we feel isolated or different.
In the second paragraph, the lyrics touch upon inheritance of words and habits, suggesting that societal and familial conditioning limit our ability to take action. The phrase "Handlingsrom knust til pinneved" conveys a sense of restricted space and shattered possibilities. The song suggests that the boundaries were set too early, before it was too late to change.
Overall, "Skamgang" is a reflection on the internal struggle between the desire for personal growth and the fear of breaking free from societal expectations and limitations.

Festa i tau
Tied to a rope
I tau rundt livet
Around my life
Har jeg en spent løpestreng som
I have a tense lifeline that
Drar meg strakt inn igjen
Pulls me tightly back in
Om jeg går for langt ut
If I go too far
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
Take one step, one step, one step forward
Piggtråd tredd i meg
Barbed wire threaded in me
Som i ei symaskin
Like in a sewing machine
Jeg blir ei anna kvass og stram
I become sharp and tense
Når samme tråd dras fram
When the same thread is pulled forward
Og tilbake
And back
Det klakker mellom blokkene
It clicks between the blocks
Ekkoet av meg
The echo of me
Spør seg hvor jeg har vært
Asking where I have been
Det stokker seg tvert
It gets confused
For inni meg kommer jeg
Because inside me I come
Fra samme sted som deg
From the same place as you
Vi arver ord
We inherit words
Arver ord og vaner
Inherit words and habits
Handlingsrom knust til pinneved
Room for action smashed to splinters
Grensa ble satt innen det
The boundary was set before that
Var altfor sent
Was too late
Går et skritt et skritt et skritt fram
Take one step, one step, one step forward
