Get Out
Frightened Rabbit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in the arch of the church
Between her thumb and her forefinger
I'm a worshipper
A zealot king, cursed, a devotee
Of the heady golden dance she does
She's an uncut drug
Find the vein and the pulse
Chased it and for a minute I was floating dead above myself

Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
I saw a glimmer in the dark
And now I know she won't get out of my heart
She won't

I'm in your purse
Pull me out and throw me down
Stick me to your lip and draw a scarlet 'O'
There's a name on my chest in red
The embossing of a branded bull
And I don't want you to

Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
I saw a glimmer in the dark
And now I know she won't get out of my heart
She won't

Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
Get out of my heart
She won't, she won't
And there's a heavenly scar

That let's me know she won't get out of my heart
She won't

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Frightened Rabbit's "Get Out" describes the singer's obsessive love for someone who possesses power over them. The arch of the church serves as a metaphor for the space between the object of their affection's thumb and forefinger, an area that signifies control. The singer states that they are a "worshipper, a zealot king, cursed, a devotee," illustrating their unyielding devotion to this person. In this context, the "heady golden dance" that the object of their affection performs can be seen as a metaphor for an addictive drug, to which the singer is hopelessly addicted. They are chasing a high that can only briefly allow them to escape themselves. The chorus of the song, "Get out of my heart, she won't," highlights the conflict the singer is experiencing between their desire for freedom and their inability to separate themselves from this relationship.

The second verse describes the singer's relationship to the object of their affection. They are trapped inside their purse and are at the mercy of their whims. The embossed name on the singer's chest is a symbol of their ownership by this person, like a branded bull. The singer is trapped by the feeling that they don't want to be owned in this way, yet they are unable to escape. The chorus amplifies the internal conflict they are experiencing.

"Get Out" is a song about the painful and complicated experience of being in love with someone who has power over you. The lyrics are an intense, emotional portrayal of the frantic and painful nature of love and addiction, and the desire to escape the complexities of these experiences. The song has resonated with many fans of indie rock and alternative music, many of whom have identified with the complicated emotions outlined in the lyrics.

I remember first hearing this song and being blown away. Ecspecially the build up to the first chorus.

It's a shame that the tragedy of Scott's death broke them up.

This was original sounding, powerful, and emotionally evocative.

A true rarity in modern music.

Was hoping to hear more from them.

I have yet to get tired of hearing this song and fount that I ever will.

These are genius lyrics and an even better video.

I normally don’t comment on videos but this something special. Being raised catholic and gay, I always felt a deep sense of shame for who I am. This song is the only one that has ever really resonated with my experience. This video was a brave and beautiful artistic choice, and it is such a powerful representation of heartbreak but specifically lesbian love which is entirely underrepresented. I saw FR in concert with my first girlfriend in 2017. I cried when they played this song. I love this man for bringing this music into the world. Rest In Peace.

Just remember to those that look back on this song:
Scott was about as honest as a songwriter as you will ever find. If he felt like writing a song about how unfulfilling his life was, he did. If he wanted to write a song about how a breakup made him want to take his own life, he did it. If he wanted to make a song about burying painful memories with the understanding that they couldn't be buried forever, he did.
And this was his happy song

In retrospect it is one of the most beautifully bittersweet songs you may ever find. Rest in peace, Mr. Hutchinson, thank you for all of the great music.

Frightened Rabbit a Scottish band making a video in Ukraine .Tragically Scott the singer is no longer with us he died at such a young age. Ukraine itself is now fighting for it's life and very existence. Seems like yesterday both of them were at peace and happy. Let's hope HAPPINESS RETURNS to all who knew him and all of Ukraine and it's people .Peace to all of them
