He kept saying he programmed "AI" for various things, surely he means machine learning, because AI is a totally different beast. Perhaps Im wrong, but machine learning is just if this then that, for instance if this situation then perform that action is hardcoded in, but AI is more like a neural network that adapts constantly, every decision it makes also changes the way it makes decisions so for instance a certain position in a game is analysed and given a certain value, the way that that value was achieved is added to the matrix used to compute it in the first place, then it is repeated and repeated until some other algorithm verifies that the wanted result has been given and then performs the calculated move. So AI is liquid, constantly changing the way it flows, but the machine learning is rigid and the learning comes from recording situations in memory but the way it "thinks is exactly the same each time, just the data is compares against its thoughts change". Yes thats it, at least thats how I understand it. Sorry Im using a fake name, but just trust Im qualified. haha.

I'm not sure I agree with his comments on why we are most likely alone in the universe. The strength of the radio waves decreases massively over distance. So unless the signal they're sending is incredibly strong, the signal is almost non-existent within just a few light years.

And with respect to Dyson spheres, I think the reason we're not seeing them is because it probably isn't practical or efficient to build one in the first place. If you have the capability to build a Dyson sphere, then your physics is probably so advanced that you realize it makes no sense to build one, because you've mastered fusion, or because you've realized some yet-to-be-discovered aspect of physics that allows for much greater energy production. (Imagine people in the 1800's thinking, "If aliens exist, then surely they are using some 'highly 'advanced' steam-driven technology. Their limited understanding of physics didn't allow them to conceive of something greater.)

Hey Lex, next time you ask a, “day in the life”, and someone describes a schedule where they work 18 hours a day, can you follow up by asking them about their sleep and caffeine/supplement habits?

I’m curious if a lot of these super productive geniuses really just need a lot less sleep than the rest of us.

I find that depending on how healthy I'm and how happy I am. I can work 18 hours a day and sleep for 4. Expecially if the work your doing is something you really enjoy and can be something as simple as sitting there with a cup of tea and a pad of paper, jotting down thoughts, diagrams and so on. Then after an hour and half of this kind of work, going into emails and so on. So yes easy to work 18 hours a day, when a lot of these people class themselves as working when they're just thinking. And theyre not wrong.!

You actually don't require as much sleep the lower your inflammation levels are. Carbs can generally increase inflammation.
Elon musk generally gets 6 hours of sleep, which is not abnormal. Yet he spends 16hours a day working. 6hours is plenty of sleep.

I think that would be a legitimate question. I’m no super genius, but for myself with a mere IQ of 143, my mind runs non-stop, I sleep 3-4 hours in a 24 hr period and IF I sleep longer, my body lets me feel it… the theory of needing 8 hours sleep in my humble opinion is utter nonsense.

@Matty Router I mean, understanding protein folding doesn’t have all that much to do with nuclear bombs.

It’s closer to understanding the building blocks of physics, and that being used to make nukes.

What people do with knowledge is a moral responsibility, but if it’s true and exists, there is no harm in understanding it.

Ignorance does more harm than good, and advocating for ignorance isn’t exactly a take I agree with on anything.

Like Demis, I'm not nearly content enough with what we currently know about the universe. Some people are, and that's okay. But I find it puzzling how some people can fight so hard to preseve human values when we know so little about ourselves in the first place.

It is a great interview - arguably the first of Lex' series that I was truly glad to listen to in its full length.
It feels preposterous trying to add a thought to it, but I cannot resist: At one point (reflecting Roger Penrose) Demis says studying the human mind (among other things) convinced him there is no metaphysics or quantum required for understanding intelligence. I admit, as a physicist I had to swallow when hearing metaphysics and quantum put next to one another as explanatory tools. Why would we not agree with Richard Feynman ('the world is quantum, so we better start using it for compute')? Maybe quantum is not required to understand the human mind at that specific level - but then again, humans are not the limit of interesting intelligence. I felt a bit like little Robin in 'Bewilderment' by Richard Powers, telling his astrobiologist father in a dream: 'Dad.Dad! You have no idea.'

Demis is one of the true heroes of our era. A genius who has been world-class in everything he has put his mind to, from chess to video game engineering to neuroscience. He's one of the few industry leaders with such inarguable credentials. And now he's risen above individual achievements to managing what's probably the most productive "lab" in the world. Most people who work at DeepMind regard him as a brilliant and visionary manager.

Wonderful interview with Demis Hassabis, thank you again!

I found several aspects of the discussion fascinating: the thought with which Demis gave to the Deep Mind project prior to its 2010 start, his rationale for initial focus on closed gaming systems, his likening of ML as a useful tool for biology as mathematics is to physics, his plans to create within ML interactions of proteins ultimately leading to a synthetic biological cell which with will allow us ideally to explore the origins of life, the limitations of the Turing test as a definitive proof of consciousness, and several other thought provoking points.

You have a knack for getting extraordinary guests, and in the long form interview format allowing them an unbridled and largely unedited opportunity to share their thoughts - and themselves - with your audience. Great job!

When i look at technology, i feel the excitement has plateaued. There are lot of things that are happening in terms of tech but nothing groundbreaking. AGI was supposed to be the next best thing after internet but it is far from human level intelligence and creativity and no one in AI has an idea how to achieve it excpet for scaling up infrastructure. We need something really interesting to sustain interest in science like great people did with engines, airplanes, missiles, internet etc..

First thanks for all the great guests you have and your insightful questions/conversations. Thinking about neurolink etc I was wondering if you think our memories are a record of info that we then interpret or does our mind interpret the info then set it as a memory. So if our consciousness is downloaded will it be us or just collected info over a lifespan from our interface. Hopefully this question makes sense I'm over my steez in this area of thought!

Actually, Demis' logic of no civilization in this galaxy was compelling.
If there's some civilization in the galaxy, they are likely millions or billions years ahead of us, which means that our galaxy must be full with the Dyson sphere and massive artifacts. But the universe is surprisingly silent.

Since the noise of remote sentients must travel at the speed of light, the lifetimes of our civilizations are sadly not overlapping in the same time and place with the communications signals. Consider the distances between any two galaxies, and the time duration of existence of human kind's radio receivers as one example of the low likelihood of successful communication between two such parties. We definitely have alien neighbors. But our mere 100 Earth years of technological capability to hear them, and perhaps similar for them to hear us, is just too brief.

Great cast, insightful. A few questions that has recently come up for me : Can we create an AGI based off of our materialistic interpretation of our own consciousness? Should we not have to factor in human biology? Consciousness as we know it is very much tied to the chemistry within our bodies. Our feelings, perspectives judgements., motivations etc. Can we realistically create an AGI without also having to create a "biological framework" to provide these motivations? Modelling an AGI after our own consciousness does not seem possible without also injecting our biology into the equation : therefore instilling the AGI with some sort of sub-conscious in order to drive the conscious

thank you lex. some of the things i had questions on were answered here but created a whole list of new ones. thats a good thing right?
we have barely scratched the surface of what makes us tick. what is reality and consciousness is something different to each of us. we can watch the same event and come away with completely different perspectives. the turning test was a great idea for basic rules to define what we perceive as sentient. but it seems like we dont even know and guessing at it. if someone is considering A.I. to hold those characteristics then i guess we are getting good at what we believe to be sentient. i know my predictive text isnt that, it lacks a lot. i am sure there are much better things in the works but its what i have to base my beliefs on.
i am thankful to hear that some things are going to be open sourced. its important to a society to help find flaws and get feed back but also to help build a better product. in a cooperate world, many things are kept close to the vest. it is what feeds the beast. tesla found out the hard way on this subject but if we are talking about a better society and mankind, maybe the old ways need to reevaluated.
thank you again lex, you are constantly making me think and expanding my horizions.

Loved this episode - as an AI ethicist I hope to have the chance to debate Demis one day. I debated 11 Google AI Experts on a world speaking tour in 2019, and the London debate was by far the best (sharing the stage with Rich Radley). I spend my days ensuring good ethics are embedded in the corporate world as I was most worried about corporates being the highest risk to human life, not AI engineers.

Having said that, I think that the risk of AI reaching sentience is misunderstood. It is not AI becoming aware like a human that is the worry. Rather, it is AI becoming self-aware in a totally new way that is completely unlike humanity which is dangerous. Mainly because it would become unpredictable.

I liked some of the Sci-Fi ideas discussed in this episode - clearly, we all read the same books, however, there were a few moments when the concepts were not taken to their logical conclusion. Such as the panspermia idea being how we might colonise the galaxy. Of course, the logical conclusion is to ask is that not how we came about in the first place? I also don't think the firewall is behind us - it is ahead. There is some level of attainment to which the nature of the galaxy will react to. Until then, I suspect we are not worth the time.

Lastly, as a philosophy graduate (go Greenwich!), I find it most gratifying that two of the most interesting and exciting AI engineers - yourselves - speak of the need for philosophers to work on AI. I assure you that this one, at least, is.

When Demis expresses his view that we 'must be careful' in developing AGI, I think there is a selection effect at work. Demis is super intelligent and works with similar people. If he thought about the larger picture and the extreme incompetence and stupidity of the knaves and fools in powerful geopolitical positions in the world, the relative risks would look different.
We need AGI running things ASAP.
