Bullet Theory
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who shot the bullet
That killed the air tonight
Without a thought, without a reason

Take a gun called hate
Up against your heart
And pull the trigger
And pull the trigger

It's over, it's only over
It's only over when we say

The smoke and mirrors
The lies that wind your tongue
Is this oppression what we wanted?
Or what we needed?
As we function on impatience
And our patience is wearing thin
And you live a lie that will destroy us all

It's over, it's only over
It's only over when we say
It's only over when we say

Back and to the left,
Come on and shoot motherfucker

You like this baby?
Just dance a little longer

It's over, it's only over

It's only over when we say
It's only over when we say

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Bullet Theory" by Funeral for a Friend are an exploration of the destructive power of hate and the consequences it brings. The first few lines set a sombre tone, asking who shot the bullet that killed the air tonight. With no thought or reason behind it, the violent act is a reminder that hate can be senseless and deadly. The lyrics then take a more philosophical turn, questioning whether the lies that wind our tongues result in oppression that we wanted, or what we needed. The repetition of the line, "It's only over when we say," speaks to the idea that the power to end conflict and hate lies within us.

The song's chorus is a call to action, urging listeners to say when it's over and to stop perpetuating the cycle of violence. The spoken interlude of "Back and to the left, come on and shoot motherfucker/ You like this baby? Just dance a little longer," is a direct reference to the JFK assassination and the conspiracy theories surrounding it. It serves as a reminder that violence and its consequences are not isolated incidents but are deeply ingrained in our history, culture, and politics.

Overall, "Bullet Theory" is a powerful song that tackles difficult themes of hate, violence, and oppression. It encourages listeners to reflect on their own beliefs and actions and to take responsibility for ending the destructive cycle.

I remember hearing this on the radio a couple times as a kid, forgot about it for years and then heard it on a playlist. It sounded familiar so I looked it up and realized it was that song I'd hear on the radio in my moms car. Made me think back to how nice it was being with her before I realized she was very manipulative. Still love my mom but knowing what I know now kills the memories a bit
