Lazarus
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Revealing your desire
Upon these ashes
In your fear
It will swallow the river that divides

There's no life in here at all
To seek this self decay
There's no life in here at all
To take these dreams away

This burning ever
Will conquer all you see
And this burning ever
Will bury your heart

There's no life in here at all
To seek this self decay
There's no life in here at all
To take these dreams away

So what are we all built upon
Soon fragile in decay
What are we all built upon
To take these dreams away

Why need a
Why need a new faith
When the old is still ok
Will you still
Will you still love this
As the interest in it fades away
As it fades away
As the interest in it fades away

It fades away
The interest in it fades away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Lazarus" by Funeral for a Friend are complex and thought-provoking. The first stanza speaks of a desire being revealed upon ashes and the fear that it will swallow the river that divides. This can be interpreted as a reference to the ashes and destruction left in the wake of the desire and its ability to consume and destroy everything in its path. The river could symbolize a dividing point between life and death, and the fear that the desire will ultimately lead to death.

The chorus emphasizes that there is no life in this situation, only self-decay and the inability to hold onto dreams. The burning ever mentioned in the second stanza can be interpreted as a metaphor for the all-consuming desire mentioned earlier. The burning will conquer all, burying the heart and leaving nothing behind.

The last verse brings up the question of what we are all built upon and how easily we can decay. The mention of needing a new faith when the old one is still okay can be interpreted as society's constant need for change and newness, despite the fact that what has worked in the past is still valid. The song ends with a reminder that everything fades away eventually, including interest in the things we once held dear.

the hook at the end is probably the best they've ever done...

Sarah Charles

Yes it is - I bought it off iTunes before i heard it here also AMAZING SONG!!!!

I think that if they were going to put this on an album they would have done so by now as they've had 2 opportuities since the release of the Streetcar single. Also, Juneau was not origionally a B-side, it was on thier 1st album making your comment rather redundent. It's a shame not many people hear it becuase of its rarity/unknown state. I hope they relase another EP with this on it, as well as A masnner of sleep - but not the demo version!

This reminds me of serpents in solitude, but damn I love this song

I actually like this more than Streetcar-I hope that if they release another CD, they will put this on it, just as they did with Juneau.

matt never sings 'boooring'! the riffs in this song are amazing. not my favorite though.

Grumpy Canadian

I knew Juno (spelled that way for the first album) was on the first album, but it seems as though noone really knows that except SUPERFANS (such as myself, I like to think).

I’m with you man <3
Been into them since I picked up the Between Order & Model EP at a show back in 2002 :)

Grumpy Canadian

What kind of budget are you on??? Teenager here, can't afford to do that. Otherwise, I would buy every CD they have out, and go to every concert.
