I did something similar when I was a kid. I had just gotten my first guitar but had no amp. So, I got a cheap cable, spliced it, got an old cassette recorder and soldered the wires to the solder points above the volume. Don't ask me where I got the idea to do that - it was 40 years ago. It was a neat little fuzz box. Eventually, I got an old reel to reel tape player from a school. They were throwing out old stuff. I plugged a new guitar cable into the microphone jack, hit record + monitor and instant amp!

You know there's one guy out there somewhere, some eccentric, who collected portable 8-track players thinking they'd be collectible one day. His family tried to have him committed. That’s pretty cool. I just recently got back into fuzz tones after many years of not being interested. What got me fuzzin’ again was a suggestion to try the behringer ultra fuzz, and wow! That thing is a beast and it cost 27 bucks (score!) , I highly suggest especially for that sludge doom sound. The video was by “fuzz lord effects” channel , a pedal maker. a few decades ago I read an interview with Lindsey Buckingham where he said that much of the fuzz on the 'Fleetwood Mac' (1975) and Rumours LPs were done using a fuzz pedal he made from the guts of an old tape recorder. This is the first time I've seen someone actually do that. For me it was kind of a 'Mythbusters' moment.

On 8 tracks, the stereo channels are separated by another track in between (interleaved) so that you get good stereo separation. That's why the pickups on the head seem to be so far apart. Depending on the tape, sometimes you would get 'crosstalk' from another track if the original recording equipment was a bit 'iffy'. They also made quadraphonic 8 tracks around that time, and I actually had one set up in my old van. They only had 2 track selections, as each track had 4 channels instead of 2 (not enough room on the tape).😉

Nice. I had a Radio Shack Archer amp back in the ‘80s. It was like a transistor radio without the radio, a little amplified speaker designed for use with electronic projects. It sounded just like that when cranked up with a guitar plugged into it( via a 1/4”-to-1/8” adapter).

Reminds me of my old Kustom solid-state amp and how it would pick up radio signals from time to time. That aside, that 8-track player makes a good fuzz box! Nice breakup and sustain! I'll bet it would sound even more massive if you wired it into your pedal board and then into a good tube amp.

I did this with a cassette Walkman back in the 80s to use as a travel headphone amp. Yer setup kinda nails the Grand Funk tone circa 1970. Make a pedal out of it 😁

I used a Pressman. It's a walk-man type recorder with a compressor/limiter. I used in the late 80's as part of my 4-track setup. Good for bass & vocals on occasion.

I used a purple chinese walkman bought from big lots and a metal nutone intercom box. A 9 v clip 3 pots two switching jacks it didnt have a foot switch. When yiu plugged in it was on. The output was like a pedal. If yiu didnt plug out it was the speaker. I series d the channels.

I got something similar from a relative. It was a 'micro' cassette kitchen thing. They were going to toss it. I drilled a hole for a jack and connected the tape head leads. The feedback from the guitar pickups to the cheesoid speaker was astounding. You didn't have to actually play the guitar. It would just self-oscillate into oblivion. Quite entertaining for a kid in the late 60's.

The best fuzz I've ever owned is the Behringer super fuzz i got recently for £20. I've had all sorts, fuzz faces, big muffs (including big deluxe sovtek Muff), some really fancy ones. And the behringer out performs them all. It apparently is a replica of one of the Boss fuzzes but in position 1 it does that 60s style dirty fuzz amazingly well, then position 2 is 90s style fuzz and doesn't sound all that great to me, then position 3 is just a clean boost. But yeah the 1st position just sounds amazing, with whatever guitar I plug into it

The extra wires on the head were likely for electronically switching to the other tracks; otherwise you'd have to move the head up and down to accomplish track switching. Much easier to select the tracks electronically.

My first amp was a Panasonic "Dyna-mite 8" 8 track player. I spliced intothe magnetic head wires with a Guitar jack....it was portable....and definitely a distortion Monster....lol

I was doing my weekly Brad the Guitologist-esque sweep of my local Goodwill and came across a crate of 8-track cassettes marked for .25 each. Shit, for a quarter a piece? Why not? I carried the whole case of 33 cassettes and took them home. I have some real jewels in there. Some even still had the cardboard sleeves. America, Steely Dan, CCR, Cat Stevens, ABBA, Saturday Night Fever soundtrack....and a few gospel Elvis tapes. AWESOME! I tool them to my mom's who still has (and uses) and 8-track and wigged out to some 8 track love.

If you make an amp out of it, just find a cool tape to put in the tape slot. Another possibility is to see how it sounds as a preamp/distortion. Maybe use the motor with a Johnson bar (like on a locomotive) to twist a pot back n forth to vary tone or volume quickly, of course you’d have to brainstorm a tone circuit, maybe tube powered....now we’re 110v so why not add a transformer and amp tube for some classic tone. You could put the tubes in an empty tape case but it would need a fan to keep from melting it......hey maybe you could put some fixed components for tone or effects in different tape cases and swap them out to change to sound. It would be fun to have different 8-track cartridges for different tones and with the output going to a “real” amp it could be a respectable effects unit.

Or just make a bong out of it...

I did the same way back when with a broken cassette player. All I had was a cheap acoustic with a magnetic pickup.
The feedback even at low, low volume was incredible! Past 3 and the sound would choke on each note, much worse than your 8 track.
Sounded much better through an extension speaker, BTW. Should have maybe tried yours through a Marshall cab! :)

My buddy had a 70's radio shack receiver/8track wired up to a guitar and 12" speaker that sounded killer. Thats how we learned to play Black Sabbath back in those days. Wrap the box with copper foil to cut down on noise.

Keith Richards did not play electric guitar on Street Fighting Man, what you heard was the sound of an acoustic guitar through a cheap tape recorder being used as a pre amp. As for Sankyo, they built tape transports for a number of different companies, Including Harman Kardon, and most notably Nakamichi, for the BX, CR and MR series of cassette recorders (although Nakamichi used their own heads which were better than pretty much everyone else's). BTW, 8-track tape was specifically manufactured with silicones or some kind of lubricants built into the tape so that it could slide over itself easily with less wear, and if you rebuild an Echoplex or other tape-machine cartridge you can't use regular reel to reel tape, you should scavenge it from an old 8-track. FWIW, I was installing AR (Automatic Radio) and Lear 8-track players into my gearhead buddies' cars back in the early to mid Seventies. In case anyone has ever wondered, there is actually a tie-in between Lear 8 track players and the guy who owned the LearJet company!

@The Guitologist I looked it up, the Leer company that makes the shells 4 pick up trucks and campers is not the same as the Lear Company that we were discussing. The add for the pick up truck cabs cracked me up, it starts by saying "your truck is your identity, it's who you are.". I hate that kind of Madison Avenue, or more likely post Madison Avenue, advertising bullshit.

By the way, with reference to automotive tape players , If somebody couldn't afford AR or Lear, they usually bought either Sparkomatic or Kraco (Kmart store brand) instead. Boy those were some real junk!

@The Guitologist , I dont know if it was the same company. Lear, or Leer? Lear Jet and Lear 8 track players were indeed from the "same" company (I don't remember if they made any automobile cassette decks). I'll have to look it up. I've never been a pickup truck kind of guy myself.....for the last 3 decades it's been either Subarus or Volvos. I realize some pickup truck drivers might sneer, but I have driven through winter blizzards that almost defy descriptions and I've never gone off the road and got stuck. I've driven through Wyoming, Montana and Colorado in whiteout conditions without incident; and drove an old Volvo up to Albany during an Alberta clipper/lake-effect snowstorm that had pickup trucks and buses off the road and stuck in snowdrifts....

That's the way we built stuff in the 70s. I had quite a collection but the tapes had a built in self destruct technology. I had a 4 trach, an 8 track but I never bought the 8 track quadrophonic. Sounds a bit like Iron Butterfly and Sabbath.

The auxiliary power input jack is switched, to disconnect the internal batteries when you plug in the jack from a "WallWart" power supply, otherwise you'd be attempting to "charge" your old style carbon-zinc batteries, with potentially explosive results. Not very smart to use a mini headphone jack (1/8" or 1/16") for that power-supply function, but that's how it was done back in the day. Nowadays we use those barrel-jack things for auxiliary power supplies, but even those are far from standardized, and at work I frequently find a piece of equipment with an odd size power-input jack, and I have to go searching to find a connector that will mate with it..... There's also lots of older equipment that uses the exposed outside conductor of the barrel jack for the positive voltage supply, which is just plain stupid.

I use the guitar preamp on my tascam 8 track and put it through my home stereo. It’s pumps so much filthy bass through the woofers and sub that my solo jams sound like there’s a bass player.

I'll have to find my sister's old "Two Track Hipster" tape cartridge player! I've had it for over 45 years. It was left in the attic with no cartridges to play. A smaller failed format of the 8 track tape! Probably wouldn't sound as good though.

That would be a great sound if you were trying to capture that Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here intro where they're trying to make it sound as if a someone is playing along to a radio. Go back and forth between a real amp and that little thing would be a nice effect.
