St Christopher's Lullaby
Gary Jules Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There by the door of my room
I don't need to know where you've been
Or where we're going to
Uou don't need to be funny for me
Don't have to always be strong
You don't need to try to be beautiful
Beauty was yours all along
so kiss the hem of St. Christopher's coat
And go on along your way
I can't figure out what you're thinking about
I'm sure that it's not me
so kiss the hem of St. Christopher's coat
Go on along your way
We, by design, walk a very fine line
And I think that's okay
take your trophies and your golden wings
Go back to your beautiful crowd
I don't need to know where you've been
But where are you going now?
"St. Christopher's Lullabye" is a song that expresses the singer's sadness and feeling of rejection towards the person they address. The opening lines of the song, "Leave your trophies and your golden wings there by the door of my room," could be interpreted as the singer asking this person to leave behind their accomplishments and worldly possessions because they don't matter in their relationship. The repetition of the phrase "I don't need to know where you've been or where we're going to" suggests that the singer is not interested in discussing the person's past or future plans because they feel unimportant to them.
The following lines, "You don't need to be funny for me, don't have to always be strong, you don't need to try to be beautiful, beauty was yours all along," reveal the singer's understanding of the person's struggles to always be perfect and live up to certain expectations. They reassure them that they don't have to pretend or try so hard because the singer already sees their inner beauty. The refrain, "so kiss the hem of St. Christopher's coat and go on along your way," could be interpreted in different ways. St. Christopher is the patron saint of travellers, so it's possible that the singer is telling the person to go on with their journey of self-discovery and leave the singer behind. Alternatively, it could mean that the person is seeking forgiveness or blessing before leaving the singer, implying that the relationship has become strained or unfulfilling.
Overall, "St. Christopher's Lullabye" is a melancholic song that captures the bittersweet feeling of letting go of someone you care about deeply. The singer feels abandoned and powerless in the face of the person's departure, but also understands that it's necessary for both of them to move on with their lives.
