Gary Puckett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And every night they lie awake
And dream of mama's chocolate cake
And wonder if there'll be a tomorrow
And will they ever see their home and their family
Or will they ever be back home

And boys who never learned to pray
Look to the heavens everyday
And stumble through a simple little prayer
And ask the Lord above
To send them home to the ones they love
Oh, God, I hope they make it home

And every day some young man dies
And in the night some young girl cries
He'll never hear his baby's laughter
He'll never, ever see his home and his family

For what he's done for you and me
But I guess he's on his way back home (home)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Home" by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap narrate the experiences of soldiers who are away from home fighting in a war. The opening lines express the yearning of troops to return home to their families and the familiar comforts of home cooking, motherโ€™s chocolate cake. The second verse speaks of soldiers feeling spiritually disconnected, many who have never been religious before, are now praying to God for their safe return, โ€œboys who never learned to pray, look to the heavens everyday, and stumble through a simple little prayer, and ask the Lord above to send them home to the ones they loveโ€. The last verse acknowledges the reality of the war with the loss of many young lives and the turmoil and sorrows of loved ones as they accept the sacrifice of their fathers and sons, while hoping for solace in the knowledge that they will be going back โ€œhomeโ€ even if it's not on this earth.

The song presents a hauntingly poignant story echoing the many voices of deceased soldiers and their families who have made incredible sacrifices for their countries. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap's "Home" is a timeless ballad due to the emotional resonance that it creates, a deep connection with the universal emotions of hope, fear, and love linked with war and soldiers' sacrifices.

This song is more than fifty (50) years old and it was about the fallen of the Vietnam War. I was there in the mid 60s, early 70s as a Medic, and saw up front what the casulty of war can do. There was no parade for us upon returning. It was not until decades later we began to hear "Thank you for your service." After all those years it still bring tears to my eyes. This song should be played as the National Anthem on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day for the fallen and the survivors with the visible and invisible scars. Thanks Gary for such a beautiful song. One of best set of vocal cords ever created by God.

One of the greatest voices in rock & roll history. Gary Puckett and the Union Gap are one of the reasons why I consider the music of the 60's as the greatest decade in rock & roll history.

This song should be played every Veteran's Day, as the National Anthem to fallen U.S. soldiers. Salute to all who've ever served, who've fought and continue to fight for the most blessed land of all. Thank Jesus for those who have the fortitude to protect, honor and preserve the benefits of being a free people. From the bottom of my U.S. Navy heart-"Thank you to all my fellow American Troops, both male and female!" God Bless you & America!
