Spell It Out
Gavin DeGraw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

With my eyes wide open
And with words unspoken
I still understand

And I'm reading your mind
Using every outline
You're drawing in my hand
Ooo, feel your fingers
Ooo, I'm in way too deep

To wake up
Step out
Cause I'm really getting used to being in this dream
You know what I mean I
Can't find
Any reason I would ever wanna turn back now
Once you spelled it out

Oh, when I first met you
There were things I'd been through
That I would never tell

But it was almost as if
You already knew my language
Cause you'd been there yourself

Ooo, I'm still falling
Ooo, don't make me return

And wake up
Step out
Cause I'm really getting used to being in this dream
You know what I mean I
Can't find
Any reason I would ever wanna turn back now
Once you spelled it out

I know it's not an accident
I can feel it crashing in
And I'm not pushing back

Come on, we can leave the world behind
Close the curtains, shut out the light
Just state the good
Don't let me go
Don't tell me I should

Wake up
Step out
Cause I'm really getting used to being in this dream
You know what I mean I
Can't find
Any reason I would ever wanna turn back now
Once you spelled it out

Once you spelled it out
Once you spelled it out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gavin DeGraw's song Spell It Out highlight the connection he has with his lover. The lines "With my eyes wide open, And with words unspoken, I still understand" describe how their understanding for each other goes beyond verbal communication. He reads her mind by "using every outline You're drawing in my hand". Their bond is so strong that he feels like he is in a dream world where he doesn't have to worry about anything. He is so deep in it that he can't find any reason to turn back now that his lover has "spelled it out".

The second verse talks about how when he met his lover, he didn't intend to reveal everything that he had been through. However, the connection between them is so intense that his lover seems to understand him without any explanation. The lines "But it was almost as if, You already knew my language, Cause you'd been there yourself" suggest that his lover has also been through similar experiences, and they share a common understanding that goes beyond language.

Overall, Spell It Out can be seen as a song that celebrates the power of love and connection beyond words. It highlights the importance of understanding and emotional intimacy in a relationship.

Successfully pulling off a key change in the middle of a song? Way to go Gavin DeGraw!

His music always brings me close to god , and he doesn’t even have to categorize this album as “Christian” or “gospel” music , he is connected to the source and this album fills my soul and helps me when I am feeling down and out , this man is so underrated as an artist but I know he is actually very highly favored in the eyes of our Heavenly Father 🙏🏽 in 2015 this song stopped me from driving off of a cliff (literally and mentally) it saved me. I listen to this song every time I feel distant from god.
