After Be-Bop-A-Lula had become a huge hit in 1956 (peaking at #7 and spending 20 weeks in the Billboard Pop Chart), Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps (often mis-named as 'the' Blue Caps) were unable to follow it up with the same level of commercial success, but released critically acclaimed songs like Race With The Devil (#96 in Billboard) and Bluejean Bop (#49).
Following a visit to Europe in 1959, Vincent managed to attract a new huge and discerning audience there, especially in England and France. By that time his career had mostly ended in the US. In 1960, while on tour in Britain, Vincent and songwriter Sharon Sheeley were seriously injured in a high-speed traffic accident. Vincent broke his ribs, collarbone, and added further damage to his already weak leg which he had injured in a motorcycle accident in 1955 and refused to have amputated, and Sheeley suffered a broken pelvis. Both Vincent and Sheeley survived, but the accident killed Vincent's tourmate and Sheeley's fiancé, Eddie Cochran.
Vincent subsequently moved to England in 1963. His stage shows became "must see" events and his bands through those years were to spawn some of the most respected players in the world today. It was during his early tours of Britain that he adopted the trademark leather outfit, at the suggestion of British Rock 'n' Roll impressario, Jack Good.

And my love is true
Don't go around with a doubt in your mind
You know, baby, I'm not the cheatin' kind because
(You'd better believe it)
Whoa... oh... whoa... you'd better believe it, baby
Somebody's been lyin'
Because I've been so true
Now stop your cryin'
And your sobbing too
You'll feel so much better when you do
You know, baby, there's no one else but you because
(You'd better believe it)
Whoa... oh... whoa... you'd better believe it, baby
(You'd better believe it)
How could you let them get under your skin
The story you heard was just a big lie
I know within my heart I've committed no sin
So baby, there's no reason to cry,
Whoa... whoa... yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(You'd better believe it)
I know, I know, I know, baby, you'd better believe it, yeah, yeah
(You'd better believe it)
(You'd better believe it) Baby,
Believe it, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(You'd better believe it) Just put a little trust in me, baby
(You'd better believe it) I'll show you that I care, ooh
(You'd better believe it)
In Gene Vincent's "You Better Believe", the singer is reassuring his lover that his love for her is true and loyal. He pleads with her to believe him and not doubt his faithfulness even though someone has been lying to her about it. The lyrics convey how deeply in love the singer is and how hurt and devastated he is by his lover's doubt. He affirms that he has not cheated on her and encourages her to believe in their relationship. The song ends with a plea for her trust and a promise to prove his love and affection to her.
The song's lyrics reflect the 1950s American society, where infidelity was a matter of significant concern in romantic relationships. Moreover, the song highlights the singer's vulnerability, love, and unwavering commitment towards his lover. The song's melody is upbeat and energetic, although the lyrics reflect the singer's vulnerability and emotional pain. The juxtaposition of the snappy melody and lyrics conveys the singer's hopefulness and optimism despite the situation's gravity.
