With the additions of cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher, Geographer spent the next year cutting their teeth in the Bay Area, winning over crowds with the heart-pounding epics that make up their debut record, ‘Innocent Ghosts’.
After being selected one of three ‘Undiscovered Bands You Need To Hear Now’ by SPIN Magazine and garnering considerable word-of-mouth praise from their energetic live shows, the band signed to San Francisco-based label Tricycle Records, releasing a 7” single for the song ‘Kites’ in October 2009.
‘Animal Shapes’ follows up ‘Kites’, building on the synth-driven aesthetic of the single, while flirting with darker, more esoteric underpinnings. The record merges Geographer’s aptitude for crafting beautiful, haunting melodies with textural sounds and poly-rhythmic energy, marking an evolution of their distinct style.
With the overwhelming response to the release of ‘Kites’ and ‘Animal Shapes’, punctuated by a dynamic and engaging live set, the band has already begun to make an indelible mark on the ears of music fans worldwide.
Giving In

I don't know if I can live without her
But I just have to pretend
In the beginning i used to be living
But now I'm just giving giving
Giving in
Like a jest taking breath for a song
I used to wonder what was
Hidden behind these walls
In the beginning i dreamed about living
But now I'm just giving giving
Giving in
I get so tired wondering where
I should be going
Leaving a trail of women tired and alone
I try so hard to share
A thing I've never known
Sometimes I feel like I believe
In a pot of gold
Who am I kidding?
There's no reason I'm winning
There's only giving giving
Giving In that's all that living
Living living Is
Oh, giving oh, giving
Giving In
In Geographer's song "Giving In," the lyrics delve into the internal struggle of walking away from a friendship and the subsequent uncertainty of whether one can truly live without that person. The singer acknowledges that they must pretend to be okay even though they are unsure of how to cope without their friend's presence.
The first verse sets the tone of the song, expressing the singer's habit of walking away from meaningful connections. They contemplate the possibility of not being able to survive without this person, yet they suppress their true emotions and put on a facade of pretending to be fine.
The second verse introduces the imagery of a city rising and falling, comparing it to a breath taken in preparation for singing. This symbolism signifies the singer's curiosity about what lies beneath the surface of their surroundings. Their initial enthusiasm and dreams about embracing life are contrasted with the present state of merely giving in to external pressures and expectations.
The bridge reflects the weariness of constantly questioning one's direction and leaving behind a trail of abandoned relationships. The singer longs to share something they have never experienced themselves, indicating a desire for a deeper connection. They admit feeling a false sense of hope, akin to believing in a pot of gold, suggesting that their pursuit of happiness might be misguided.
The final repetition of the phrase "giving in" portrays resignation and acceptance of the current circumstances. The singer recognizes that the act of giving in is all that their existence has become, emphasizing their sense of defeat. The repetition of the word "giving" emphasizes the theme of surrender throughout the song.
Overall, "Giving In" explores themes of personal struggle, emotional exhaustion, and the need to conform to societal norms. The lyrics paint a picture of a person who is trapped in a cycle of giving in rather than fully embracing life.
