With the additions of cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher, Geographer spent the next year cutting their teeth in the Bay Area, winning over crowds with the heart-pounding epics that make up their debut record, ‘Innocent Ghosts’.
After being selected one of three ‘Undiscovered Bands You Need To Hear Now’ by SPIN Magazine and garnering considerable word-of-mouth praise from their energetic live shows, the band signed to San Francisco-based label Tricycle Records, releasing a 7” single for the song ‘Kites’ in October 2009.
‘Animal Shapes’ follows up ‘Kites’, building on the synth-driven aesthetic of the single, while flirting with darker, more esoteric underpinnings. The record merges Geographer’s aptitude for crafting beautiful, haunting melodies with textural sounds and poly-rhythmic energy, marking an evolution of their distinct style.
With the overwhelming response to the release of ‘Kites’ and ‘Animal Shapes’, punctuated by a dynamic and engaging live set, the band has already begun to make an indelible mark on the ears of music fans worldwide.

All my words on his lips
And my brain is on edge
I'm next to the bed
Where i saw you
My weight is like his
And my hate burns like this
In my hands in his fist
And my love is so quick
Like the legs of my kids
All the worlds i could lift
Only fit
Where i saw you
Pile lover upon lover
'til we're covered with skin
There's nothing to discover
From the thunder and lightning
There's no way to recover
This is love not loving
But now we are all eachother
I was a brother when i saw you
The meaning behind Geographer's song "Kites" is open to interpretation, but it seems to be a lament about lost love and the pain of seeing someone move on with someone else. The song is filled with vivid imagery that captures the emotions of the singer. The lyrics "my wings are like this, all my words on his lips" suggest that the singer feels powerless and silenced, as if someone else has taken all of their ideas and made them their own. The line "my weight is like his, we both lost what we kissed" indicates that the singer and their former lover were once connected but have now grown apart, and that there is a sense of loss and regret.
The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, as it describes the overwhelming emotions that the singer feels. The lines "pile lover upon lover, 'til we're covered with skin" suggest that the singer has been with other people since their breakup, but that nothing can replace what they once had. The repetition of the phrase "where I saw you" throughout the song emphasizes the importance of this memory to the singer, and how it continues to haunt them even as they try to move on.
Overall, "Kites" is a poignant and emotionally charged song that speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and loss. Its vivid imagery and powerful chorus make it a standout track on Geographer's 2015 album "Ghost Modern."
