With the additions of cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher, Geographer spent the next year cutting their teeth in the Bay Area, winning over crowds with the heart-pounding epics that make up their debut record, ‘Innocent Ghosts’.
After being selected one of three ‘Undiscovered Bands You Need To Hear Now’ by SPIN Magazine and garnering considerable word-of-mouth praise from their energetic live shows, the band signed to San Francisco-based label Tricycle Records, releasing a 7” single for the song ‘Kites’ in October 2009.
‘Animal Shapes’ follows up ‘Kites’, building on the synth-driven aesthetic of the single, while flirting with darker, more esoteric underpinnings. The record merges Geographer’s aptitude for crafting beautiful, haunting melodies with textural sounds and poly-rhythmic energy, marking an evolution of their distinct style.
With the overwhelming response to the release of ‘Kites’ and ‘Animal Shapes’, punctuated by a dynamic and engaging live set, the band has already begun to make an indelible mark on the ears of music fans worldwide.

Geographer Lyrics

and I'll be laughing the whole way down
with thunder beneath us all
i want to feel is your arms
i know i'm leaving but we all
leave no matter what
if time is a mouth to feed
every hour is ice in our fingers' heat
if it changes you i will never see
old lovers fall like leaves
but just if you let them
the roofs of the city like an
ocean spread for miles
i swear i saw my whole life
flicker in a window light
you think you know what I'm
thinking but you don't know
why i need you tonight
you say you feel nothing hoping
nothing's all i'll leave behind
if time is a mouth to feed
every hour is ice in our fingers' heat
so give your time to me
if it changes you i will never see
old lovers fall like leaves
but just if you let them
i hear them beneath your feet
but nothing is endless
Geographer's song Paris beautifully captures the feelings of fleeting love and the transient nature of life itself. The opening lines, "that look will take me right to the ground, and I'll be laughing the whole way down" suggests the artist's vulnerability and desire to let herself go in the embrace of a lover. The metaphor of thunder beneath them heightens the sense of intensity and urgency that the artist feels.
The artist then goes on to express her desire to feel her lover's arms around her, acknowledging that she is leaving soon and that everyone leaves eventually. The lyrics "if time is a mouth to feed, every hour is ice in our fingers' heat" beautifully depict the fragility of time, how every moment is fleeting and how we must make the most of the time that we have. The artist seeks her lover's time, acknowledging that it might change her, but she is willing to take that chance.
The artist then acknowledges that old lovers fall like leaves, but only if we let them. The roofs of the city like an ocean suggest the vastness of the world and how small we are in comparison. The lyrics "I swear I saw my whole life flicker in a window light" suggest the artist's realization of the briefness of life and the importance of living in the moment.
The lyrics "you think you know what I'm thinking but you don't know why I need you tonight" suggest that although the artist's lover might believe that he understands her, he doesn't fully comprehend the depth of her emotions. The final lyrics, "I hear them beneath your feet, but nothing is endless" suggest that the artist hears the sounds of old lovers beneath her, but she understands that everything must come to an end.
Overall, Geographer's Paris beautifully captures the bittersweet nature of love and how fleeting life can be.
