Self-taught in music, he studied law at the University of Leipzig. The most prolific composer of his era, he was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and a life-long friend of Georg Friedrich Händel. While in the present day Bach is generally thought of as the greater composer, Telemann was more widely renowned for his musical abilities during his lifetime.
Telemann traveled widely, absorbing various musical styles and incorporating them into his own compositions. He is known for writing concertos for unusual combinations of instruments, such as multiple violas or trumpets.
He held a series of important musical positions, culminating in that of music director of the five largest churches in Hamburg, from 1720 until his death in 1767. He was succeeded by his godson Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

Is the harpsichord just playing the strings' parts?
John Santrizos
@Seabass A.M. basso continuo is the term you're looking for

@Seabass A.M. The harpsichord part is omitted from the original parts and also lacks a score. At least in what I've been able to find. I've created an edition for score purposes and clean parts, but writing a harpsichord part has been difficult.

@Ars Lyrica Houston to add ok, I forget the name of the exact strategy but a lot of brouque music doesn't have proper harpsichord parts, they usually just have chords but the harpsichord players job with that is to improvise around the cords and music given, I don't remember if Telemon used that strategy for the harpsichord in this piece but it's always something to consider.

Hi Meghan, the harpsichord usually plays chords with some connective melody in the treble. It doesn't double the strings, but rather compliments those parts.

Peut-être un jour nous rendrons nous compte qu'il est inutile d'employer ces instruments "naturels" qui sont tout le temps faux et désagréables à écouter...
