Beyond The Sea
George Benson(조지 벤슨) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some where beyond the sea, some
Where waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing
Somewhere beyond the sea she's there
Watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high then
Straight to her arms
I'd go sailing
It's far beyond the star, it's near
Beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt my heart will
Lead me there soon
We'll meet beyond the shore, we'll kiss
Just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea and
Never again I'll go sailing

It's far beyond the star-it's near
Beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt my heart will
Lead me there soon
We'll meet beyond the shore, we'll kiss
Just as before
Happy we will be beyond the sea and
Never again I'll go sailing

And never again I'll go sailing
And never again I'll go sailing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of George Benson's "Beyond the Sea" describe a yearning for a faraway lover who is waiting on golden sands for the singer to join her. The singer imagines flying like a bird to her arms and kisses her on the shore beyond the sea. The lyrics convey a sense of hope, longing, and anticipation as the singer believes he will be reunited with his lover soon. The use of the metaphor of the sea and the stars creates a sense of vastness and distance that the singer must traverse to reach his companion. The repetition of the phrase 'beyond the sea' emphasizes the singer's belief that his lover is waiting for him in a place beyond.

The song was first recorded in 1945 by Bobby Darin, and it has since been covered by numerous artists, including Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, and Robbie Williams. George Benson's version was released in 1989 and became a hit in the UK. The song's melody and lyrics have been frequently used in movies, including Finding Nemo and The X-Files. The song's timeless quality has made it a popular choice for romantic occasions and events.

Count Basie had been dead for a year or two when this was recorded, but the band was still touring, and I'd like to think that Benson wanted to close his LP with this track, which was so different from the disco-influenced material on the rest of it, to perhaps tribute him...
...with so many members of the Basie Band (as well as studio giants) on it:
George Benson – lead vocals, guitar
James Newton Howard – synthesizers
Joe Sample – acoustic piano
Freddie Green – rhythm guitar
Earl May – bass
John Robinson – drums
Frank Wess – alto saxophone
Charles Williams – alto saxophone
Robert Eldridge – baritone saxophone
George Coleman – tenor saxophone
Jimmy Heath – tenor saxophone
Robin Eubanks – trombone
Slide Hampton – trombone
Benny Powell – trombone
Dave Taylor – trombone
Jon Faddis – trumpet
Earl Gardner – trumpet
Joe Newman – trumpet
Lew Soloff – trumpet
Felix Vega – trumpet
Frank Foster – horn arrangements and conductor
Ralph Burns – string arrangements and conductor
(This is the kind of assemblage that makes one gasp, with irony, "My god, couldn't they find anyone who could play?")
I'd also like to think that Benson really got off on being backed up by the ne plus ultra of "time" guitarists, Freddie Green (who's actually heard better here than he is on most Basie tracks).
And, the Count being deceased, who do they get to sit in his chair?
Why the guiding genius behind the (Jazz) Crusaders of course, Joe Sample.
This became for me, immediately upon hearing it, the ultimate rendition of this tune.

By far the best version ever. Made it his own but retained respect for the original. Thats hard to do-but Bensen makes it look easy.

My daughter's love this because of Nemo, lol with Bobby Darin im going to show them this version, amazing !!!!

rosethecopycat

@Oscar Escalante Bobby Darin's version is brutally arranged like an elephant tripping across the room with apologetic string interludes. But Benson's version swings its ass off in the slower groove. Perfect pocket.

@rosethecopycat I love the way you described Bobby Darin’s version lol. I grew up listening to it but I love Bensons cover much better smooth as silk.
