Papa Was A Rollin' Stone & Killer
George Michael and Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the third of september
That day I'll always remember, yes I will
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died

Never had a chance to see him, no
Never heard nothing but bad things about him
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth
Mama just hung her head and said

[chorus]
"papa was a rollin' stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone"
[repeat]

Hey, mama, is it true what they say
That papa never worked aday in his life
Some bad talk going around sayin'
Papa had three outside children
And another wife
That ain't right

Heard some talk about papa and his storefront
Preachin'
Talkin' about saving souls and all the time
Leachin'
And dealing in dirt
Stealin' in the name of the Lord

But mama she just said
[chorus]
Say I heard my papa was a jack of all trades
Is that what papa sent to an early grave?
Folks say papa would beg, borrow or steal just
To pay his bills
Hey, mama, folks say papa was never much in thinkin'
Spent most of his time chasin' women and drinkin'
But mother, I'm depending on you
To tell me the truth

But my mama she just said
[chorus (2x)]

Overall Meaning

To George Michael and Queen and Lisa Stansfield, the lyrics to "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" speak of a son's longing to understand his father's life and choices. The song begins with the son reminiscing about the day his father died and how it affected his life. He had never seen his father and the only thing he knew about him were bad rumors. The son turns to his mother to learn the truth about his father's life, but his mother is unwilling to share anything. She eventually confirms that his father was a rolling stone, a man who never stayed in one place for too long and had a wandering heart. The chorus repeats the famous line "Wherever he laid his hat was his home," emphasizing his father's nomadic lifestyle. The son then confronts his mother about the rumors of his father's other children, wives, and immoral actions, but his mother only hangs her head and says nothing.

Throughout the lyrics, the son struggles to reconcile his feelings towards his father. He hears rumors that his father was involved in criminal activities and used religion to manipulate people. He also learns that his father was not an attentive husband or father and spent most of his time chasing women and drinking. However, the son still seeks answers and tries to understand his father's life. The song ultimately conveys a painful realization that because of his father's choices, the family was left alone and without a patriarch to guide them.

The song "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" was first written and recorded by the Motown group The Temptations in 1972. It was later covered by the British pop group, George Michael and Queen, and features Lisa Stansfield on vocals. The song became a hit and won a Grammy Award in 1993.

I actually have this album in cassette tape! One of my absolute favorite songs by George Michael. I had the privilege of seeing him live in concert back in the early 90's. The man's voice is better live than on his recordings. Amazing voice.
